A turbo R (or a Brooklands from the same era) is on my list of vehicles I'd like to own. I've always been drawn to big luxury saloon cars. Currently I drive an XJ8 but am wondering whether to buy a Turbo R as a second car.

I've just got to ignore the people who tell me not buy one because A) they are too expensive if they fail to proceed and B) being in my late 20's I'm too young for one. Though I bought my Jag when I was 24. Hmm...
People used to mock me for buying a Rover at 27, but the last laugh was on me when they realised the Rover would out-drag and out-handle their Triumphs, Capris etc as well as doing the lazy limo bit... you're never too young for a nice barge.

I would love one of these at the right price.

So much presence and class. And I'm sure it would give you a scare if you saw it in the rear view!

Last of the true Bentley breed? The Arnage follows the same recipe, has the same engine, and electrics that mostly work. Same can even be said for the current Mulsanne.
I'll stand to be corrected but the Turbo R is the last body over chassis Bentley. All my electrics work. I have an engine that I can actually see that is not hidden away under plastic covers. When you step inside it smells like a Bentley and Rolls Royce should. The guages have a lovely script. Whilst dynamically the Arnage might be the better car with a massively stiffer shell I did not buy the Turbo R to set the fastest lap time. Regardless of money I would take my Turbo R over anymore recent offering from Bentley.

As far as I am aware, all Rolls-Royces and Bentleys since the Silver Shadow 1/T1 have been monocoques. The last Bentley to feature body-on-chassis construction was the S3 Continental.

I stand corrected smile.
Just been out for a drive in mine. Always try and take it out every Sunday. Missed last Sunday so good to give it a run today.
Taking my mother and mother in law out with the missus tomorrow for Easter Sunday lunch. It will be the first time my mother has been in the car. So unlike today when I have the drivers side window down I can listen to the air rush from the turbo, tomorrow will have to be a little more sedentary.
Magnificent motor cars. Buy one and enjoy smile

Almost. The Phantom V and VI were body-on-chassis, but you're right about Bentleys.

The last 'proper' product of Crewe was the Silver Cloud/S type Bentley with a chassis. You should see the class division in the RREC about this small problem. In fact every model of Bentley and RR has its own 'club' except the Shadow/Spirit/Seraph and Bentley derivitives. These are quaintly described as 'Post 65'
The other thing that sticks in my craw a bit about the RREC is the way they bang on about the ELEGANCE of the marque when in fact RR had vry little to do with the bodies as 90% wer farmed out to firms like Park Ward,Hooper, etc and these bodis could be found on other makes Daimler etc
The engineering of Henry Royce is what dr me to my old girl 90 Spirit II but i have put my foot down in a Turbo R and Boy did she go, in fact the car asked to be let loose. In the Royce i do feel a little bit embarrassed putting her over 65!! although she has proved she is quite happy at a speed a touch in excess of that.

Oh,as regards servicing, a lot can be done by yourself, and i have found a local indie who will do a 12k service for £600.00 which is less than what the old V70 takes out my pocket each year

If I ever found myself with a family to punt around then I would have one of these in a hearbeat... one of the last truly classy cars on the road I think.

Unfortunately however they don't make much sense as a singleton so a Turbo R will remain, for now at least, a dream!

Eh? Stripped-out racing Bentley Turbo GT3RS? Yeah, that makes sense...

...and yes, I'd forgotten the Phantoms, as I was thinking of the more mainstream production models...
