One of the things that F1 drivers (the good ones) are famous for is that they rarely make the same mistake twice. Pastor seems to be able to make the same mistake and have the same crash many times over. It's almost like he's driving over his limit constantly just to keep the car pointing in a straight line. If it does anything unexpected (which the Lotus does a lot this year) then he can't cope and normally wipes off a corner or two.

It seems like he will have an accident at any point and if you don't watch out, he'll take you out too. I hope he's paying a lot for his ride this year, they'll be spending a ton of cash on carbon fibre.

If it was me driving on the same track as him, I'd be trying to get his super-license taken off him. Unfortunately money talks in F1 more than anything else and his crashes probably generate more publicity than an 8th place would... Hmmmm, maybe that's why he's employed, because you're guaranteed at least one decent shot of the car each weekend, as it slides down the wall and removes a wheel or two. Cynical, moi?

Lewis dropped it because he was flat out, as a rookie with tyres down to the canvas because the geniuses on the McLaren prat perch left him out. Slightly different circumstances methinks.

Apart from the bad attitude the problem with Pastor is he bins it every weekend, mainly through ineptitude. Yes the car is ste but simply not turning the steering wheel enough and crashing as a result is a bit of a joke to be honest.
I love Lewis fans.

He bins it? other person's fault.
His attitude? impeccable.

@1:23 - he's a VERY lucky boy he didn't kill/mame someone on that one.

No it doesn't. He has talent. He beat Alonso in a straight race, IIRC.

He might be ragged, but he can be quick. This years car is a dog, neither he nor Gosjean suddenly forgot how to drive.

He is along way back in my list of preferred F1 drivers, but say it makes a mockery is a little too far. He is at least quick on his day. More complex than just being a "pay driver"
I'd agree he does have a talent and has shown to be quick. His talent appears to be the ability to keep his foot in where others would back off. When it works he's quick but it doesn't seem to work very often.

I'm not sure then whether it's a talent or a failing but I lean towards failing.

As far as I am concerned the guy is toxic. He should never have had an F1 seat. The sooner he gets rejected and thrown out of the show, the better.

Finally Lotus pair Maldonado and Grosjean are having a good race. P12 and P13.

There's a degree of similarity between Maldonado and Andrea de Cesaris.

de Cesaris became known as de Crasheris and retained his position in F1 for so many years due to the money he was able to bring (via a family connection to Marlborough).

The main difference is that de Cesaris was actually a lot better than he often appeared.

Is that your defintion of good? Bunch of retirements and they still only finished ahead of a TR, 2 Marussias and a Caterham?

I wouldn't disagree with you at all - his history and they way he appears to have dealt with certain incidents in his racing life don't suggest a particularly pleasant person. However sport is full of ugly personalities.

I just don't agree that he can be dismissed as completely talentless. No matter how much I despise the man I do have to, reluctantly, concede he does have a bit of talent.

Yeah. His family ran an Italian restaurant just up the road in Swindon apparently.

Dont say that in this thread. People will instantly forget him beating Grosjean, but will just pick out every possible mistake instead.

Does anyone know what the car failure (not driver failure) rate is?

All from wikipedia

Driver AUS MAL BHR CHN ESP MON CAN AUT GBR GER HUN BEL ITA SIN
Romain Grosjean Power Unit 11 12 Gearbox 8 8 Rear Wing 14 12 Water Leak Spun Off Power Unit 16 13
Pastor Maldonado Power Unit Power Unit 14 14 15 Gearbox Power Unit 12 17 12 13 Exhaust 14 12

Note pastor was classified at Silverstone as he completed 90% race distance but he actually retired with a broken exhaust.

just for fun, qualifying:

Driver AUS MAL BHR CHN ESP MON CAN AUT GBR GER HUN BEL ITA SIN
Romain Grosjean 21 16 16 10 5 14 14 16 11 15 15 15 18 16
Pastor Maldonado No time 17 17 No time No time 15 17 14 15+ 19 No time 17 17 18

+ Pastor qualified 15th but was excluded as he didn't have enough fuel in the car to return to the pits.
