Hello:

I am trying to get together a last minute driving trip to Munich.
Plan is to drive to Folkestone tomorrow and come back on Easter Monday.

Problem is that we have a cat and it's a bit too late to sort things out for her. Another part of me thinks that it would be quite awesome to bring her to Munich with us!

So what rules and regulations are there regarding bringing pets across the channel? Is it a simple case of chucking her into the carrier and off we go? Or am I suppose to have done loads of paper work prior to bringing her?

Thanks in advance.

The latter. I suspect you guessed that. wink However once you have done the paperwork it is a piece of piss.

For dogs (no idea if different for cats):

Driving out to Europe = no problem at all - they dont care and there are no checks.

Coming in:

-Pet passport needed
-Must be chipped or tattoed
-Evidence of the rabies vaccination
-Stamped up worming inoculations from 24-48hrs before travel (IIRC).

Basically its easy to go out, but there are humps to jump through on the way back in.

Plus, how would you feel if she escaped? Is she trained to come to you when you call her? Have you got her used to wearing a lead so she can exercise?

It's 24-120 hours, and I think it's in tablet form for tapeworm, not an inoculation. Must be vet-administered.

The major ferry operators can arrange the vet appointment for you near where you're staying. We were quoted £38 - not sure what a vet would charge directly though.

OK just back and the vet in France charged €40 for administering the mandatory echinococcus (tapeworm) tablet and "fitness to travel" check. This was a very small practice, well off the beaten track, in Brittany. The vet spoke excellent English and was fully conversant with the UK regs and pet passport scheme.
