Following yesterdays tragic accident and the arrest of an HGV driver maybe the above option
should at least be trialled, especially in any roadwork zones.

Sorry to rant about this again but i am bloody sick of some of the drivers who think just because they have
indicated they have a god given right to pull into lane 2, regardless of any vehicle which may be almost alongside.

Getting on the subject of the 50mph average zones, just how there are not more accidents beggars belief and
surely it would be a much safer option if they were restricted to lane 1 on those stretches?

Apologies to all the sensible truckers on here but there are a hell of a lot of bad apples spoiling the cart for you.

I was a huge fan today of the trucker sat in the 3rd of 4 lanes, pottering along at 56mph with no trailer behind him.

Yes please or at least restricted far more like in Germany. Once particular pleasant HGV driver caused me to do a full emergency break when he decided to pull out regardless of me approaching.

Yes I should have anticipated it - in fact did, but he should have checked his mirrors seen that the space was not there and should have waited.

I think it's time we widen some of our motorways. I'd be for this as a temporary measure, or using the hard shoulder as a live lane, but we need more capacity on some stretches.

How do you know this information is correct.
Did you witness the lead up to the accident or have you been shown hard evidence to support your claims.
In 99% of the accidents involving an HGV the driver/drivers will be arrested as this is the procedure followed by the police innocent or guilty.

Perhaps they should limit the old fart that bumbles in the middle lane at 50 or the woman doing her hair and nails and make up while driving across two lanes or even the chap on his phone to the inside lane too.

All freight should be on rails. Simple really.

They don't need to be restricted to one lane - they need to be told very clearly that you don't start an overtaking manoeuvre unless you have a speed differential of more than 0.00025 mph!

Time to stop the madness of "elephant racing".

Agreed most freight on rails, but also agree that on 2 & 3 lanes roads, HGVs are only allowed in L1. I'd also go as far as to say anything that is not a car is not allowed in the outside lane.

Especially on roads like the M26, it was trialled on the M11 for a while where it causes major issues as well.

No i didn't witness it but i see hard evidence every time i use motorways.

I am not tarring all truckers with the same brush, there are plenty of competent HGV drivers on our roads
but those who just pull out, sometimes before they have even indicated are a menace to our roads.

Limit cars to the inside. They cause far more accidents than trucks.

Won't work unless you run rails to all the recipients of the goods.
