So, as the title suggests, I was taking off my Sub when the case back fell off onto the floor. It had simply come loose so my first question is: has this happened to anyone else??

However, this did give me a chance to do the one check I didn't do when I bought it last year: look at the insides! Everything seemed present and correct with re-assuring Rolex markings in the right places. I have included some pictures so hopefully someone can confirm this is all good.

My final question is this: should I get it serviced? It's a 1996 model and I don't think it ever has been serviced (certainly not in the past nine years). I don't intend to go swimming with it as it fogged up the last time so I'm tempted to just buy the correct tool to fit the back (it's just hand tightened right now) and carry on wearing it.

Shouldnt have fallen off to be honest. The backs on these are normally screwed down tight.

It probably fogged up last time you got it wet because the back wasn't screwed down tight!

I'd definitely suggest a strip down, clean and re-oil. A Rolex Submariner is an expensive item and, just like a Ferrari 456, if I was buying one I'd want to make sure it had been serviced properly.

I went swimming (well, sauna and a hot-tub...) six months ago so if was loose then it should have come off sooner, right? It gets worn everyday so it's taken its time working itself loose.

If I get it serviced, is Rolex AD (expensive) or an independent (cheaper but just as good) better? I remember reading on this forum that non-authorised service centres cannot order authentic parts...

Rolex and accredited independent will cost the same £430.

Turn around time is a lot quicker now at Rolex, so unless the independents drop their price, their USP of quicker turnaround is gone. So I'd opt for the Rolex service and accompanying warranty you'll get.

Personally I would definately get it serviced by Rolex. It is eighteen years old and you say it has never been serviced and has fogged up in the past. Now the back has fallen off !!!

For piece of mind and to get it checked for water damage it needs a service. You do not know how long it has been damp inside.

Why buy a Submariner and then not submerse it - !???

My nearest AD is Newcastle under Lyme, I think. Does anyone know of any good independents around here or in Shropshire? I guess it's service time!

Do you give a Rolex certificate and your work is certified by Rolex. If you do I will send my Sub & GMT to you

Part of being Rolex accredited is that they will warranty their work also. Agreed about timescale being a factor though. My local accredited place takes about 4 wks, can be sooner by request if urgent though. www.watchworks.co.uk

Sure. However I have a watch that is fresh from Rolex Service Centre and it is not performing well. I may need to return it to Rolex, who are not local and who will want it for up to 14 working days. A local independent would be... erm... local and probably turn it round swiftly.

No certificate like you get from Rolex im afraid but my in-house watchmaker has Rolex ticket and provides 12 months warranty, so parts can be sourced through the usual channels. The 'sports models' (Datyona, DSD, latest Subs) have to go back to Rolex if parts are needed outside service requirement. He used to be a senior watchmaker for Watches of Switzerland so has authorisation to work on most premium brands. He's done a few watches for PHers on here with no complaints.

Not pi$$ing on your parade, but the Rolex certificate when selling is God. If I was keeping my Rolex never intending to sell I would use people like you all day long. When you want top dollar and to sell quickly having that Rolex service or repair certificate, along with verification that it is what it says it is, it's worth every penny of £430

^^You are correct of course. Same rules when buying / selling a car. Certificates matter. But if you're keeping it.............

It is true, a Rolex service launders any watch.

It adds credence to a watch which lacks other provenance, but it is worth a good deal less where the watch comes as a full set.

Really? I prefer a watch with a new Rolex service card over one without one and papers that are years old.

The latter watch may have been bodged about with by all and sundry or be nicked. One newly serviced by Rolex will be mechanically correct and checked for having been thieved.
