I'm thinking about buying a Jensen Interceptor and talking to guy today who mentioned a mate with a Interceptor. He said he uses it a lot and has a diesel nailed into it. There seems a couple of posts with people saying the same.

Are there people who have done this and enjoying loads of reliable good fuel consumption miles out there?

Not one for the purists but a practical Jensen?

I knew an xj-s with a Perkins many years ago.

The perfect combination of poor build quality and nasty engine.

If you can't run it, don't muck it up for the next person.

Good advice. The heart of an Interceptor is its Mopar V8.

Jensen engines are reliable - the Chrysler V8 is a well built unit and is not highly stressed. Ancillaries break, but the engine and gearbox combo are robust. As mentioned above, if the MPG bothers you, do not buy a Jensen, and please don't ruin one.

PS: practical Jensen? I ran mine as a daily for almost two years, and drove it 3000 miles around Europe. Almost any classic car can be practical.

I hear you on a purist level but these guys are using these cars, please speak out if it's you! Is 12000 is a renegade Jensen better then listening to that lovely burble for 3000 miles a year?

I don't know!

How much do you suppose a conversion to a diesel engine would cost? I bet it would pay for an awful lot of petrol rather than spoil the car by shoving an AGA under the bonnet.

Good question. I saw a post that mentioned Croperdy Garage were looking at offering Interceptors with BMW V8 diesels in, interesting to see what they would charge.

V8 BMW diesel engine is probably more powerful than the original engine - with double the MPG?

Yup. If you want more power and better MPG, get a nice brand new Mopar crate engine in there. The factory support is lovely - they come from the factory with the engine management already wired up for a plug-and play installation. Much less hassle, probably cheaper to do, and it'll still have "soul".

Putting a 5.9 litre petrol V8 in an Austin FX4 on the other hand, could be an improvement.

Never.

I'd rather 'only' do 500 miles per year in a Jensen than any amount of miles in one that has been ruined by having a hideous soot-chucking tractor engine installed.

I can't even get my head around the mentality of anyone that would think this is a 'good' idea.
