Hi all. The time has come for me to replace my pads and disks on my 2003 BMW z4 2.5i. I have been looking through euro car parts and carparts4less and have seen quite a few different brands. After a google search on the subject I have learnt that people have had problems with PAGID and that EBC are total crap. I have not heard a lot about Bosch or the other brands. As you probably gathered I am looking for the best quality. does anyone known who makes the OEM pads and discs?

Wise to stick to OEM suppliers. RealOEM will probably tell you who makes what- with BMW it's usually Textar, Jurid or ATE. I've never been happy with pattern pads.

Sometimes you will find that wear and tear parts like that, arent always terrible prices from the dealers anyway, so always worth pricing with the dealers.

And a lot of the parts ECP sell, whilst claiming OEM quality etc and claiming big brand names...seem to fall short of said quality in reality

Pagid should be good though. EBC...variable

Wouldn't touch EBC with a bargepole!

Pagid, Textar, or ATE are most normal on BMW I think, my own preferance is Pagid all day & every day.

Really! Why so I have EBC yellow on the 911 good bite when cold. Several track days and air field days fade free constantly braking from 160 to 0 with no fuss and little brake dust.

Use red stuff ceramics on all mupy other cars with just as much success on track days and road.

Very early green stuff were rubbish but that was 15 or so years ago with several changes since.

I have tried red yellow & blue on various peoples recommendations & couldn't get either to even last 1 track day for a full set of fronts on an e36 325 and didn't even find them any better than normal oe standard pads. In fact boggo Mintex are much better on feel and modulation, but not significantly better on longevity.

If you think EBC are good you really should try some good pads.

On the track car I ONLY use Pagid RS29 now. Yes they cost 3 x as much, but last for a full year of track use rater than a set a day, they also bite considerably better, do not fade at all & are kinder to the discs.

WIN, WIN, WIN.

Andy I've tried all brands pagid included and they are very good prob the best but it depends on which compound you get.
The basic pagid oem replacement pads are good but obviously are not not as fade resistant " performance" pads

My experience on ebc does not match yours no need to be patronising, the current yellow fronts have done two track days and two air fied days however the car has done very little road miles. I find it very hard to belive that a they were the same as standard pads and b you went through a set in one day.

For feel and fade ebc are up there for me and I've not had the longevity issues you have found. So they are a decent pad certainly not rubbish and not in the " barge pole" class by any stretch of the imagination.

Does the op do track days anyway? I'm sure ebc would be up to the task. He's talking about oem replacement anyway.

On my Subaru and integra standard pads faded badly in fact arse ckenchingly on a few occasions ebc reds stopped that all together and yellow were even better for feel. I've not managed to over heat them like I said from 160 to zero stops all day at bruntingthorpe. Something I could not have done with oem pads.
Pagid are better I'm not denying that but ebc are certainly a lot better than any oem pad for track work

Ps when did you try them all compounds were changed in 2010 and probably again since. Plus I believe they are all made in the uk.

Pps police use yellow stuff pads and have for years. That's all of a lot of testing miles obviously a lot at high speed. Also plenty of race schools use them too.

Pesty,

Sorry if you thought I was being patronising, that was not my intention.

I was just strongly emphasising my EXTREMELY negative experience with EBC, obviously they will be different on all cars & with all drivers, but in my hands/car they were unbelievably cr@p.

One other point, the OP's car will ba of a similar weight & braking set up as my e36, so whether that means my experiences will be closer to his may or may not be true also.

No worries It was just that one line.

I tried ebc yellow on my Subaru after setting a set of mintex on fire.( well they completely failed then sat there smoking ii thought the whole car was going to go up)

I find ebc a good ballance cost/ performance that's all I have pagid oem replacements on my two other cars because they are cheap on euro car parts. I have no need for anything with higher operating temps on those despite them weighing two tons smile
