Not sure that it's the BBC who are the morons.
I stand by it. Announcing the result of a sporting event with no warning shortly before it is due to be broadcast is braindead. The one I saw which annoyed me didn't even say '...and in the F1' - it was just 'Lewis Hamilton has failed to win ...' I couldn't get my fingers in my ears fast enough! Galveston said:
I don't have Sky so needed to avoid the race result until this afternoon. I have a Sunday morning media diet of no TV, no radio, no Facebook, no Twitter, selected websites only (i.e. no news or motorsports websites) etc. My home page is always set to BBC News but when it opens I don't look at it, just navigate to something else.
It's really, really not hard.
Exactly, my wife wasn't chuffed when I turned the radio off at 9.55 but understood when I said we weren't listening to the news. It's really, really not hard.
We have someone who is upset every time its a highlights race, you'd think they would learn!
These stories always remind me of the old Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads show where Terry and Bob try desperately not to find out the score of a football match, they want to watch later on Match of the Day.
Quite amazed at the lack of sympathy for the OP. I don't think he asked for it, or it was all his own fault! Sure, many of have been caught out in the past, but it reamins a bit (unsurprisingly) stupid of the BBC to give out the results of an event they haven't yet shown.
I often put the news on for news, i.e. have they found missing plane, has world war lll broken out etc, rather than the results of people playing games and having races (I appreciate that nothing else matters in some peoples lives). Sometimes the news is just on after another program, or on in the background. This happened before Bahrain but the presenter, for once, did say 'if you don't want to know the results, look away now' just enough time to flip channels. They often do it for other sports, it should be standard protocol.
Anyway, I think we now know it will be one of two drivers who win all the rest of the season's races, baring any dramas. Is that likely? Did I miss any today? The whining drone of the doodlebugs and nothing much happening sent me fast asleep....

I usually avoid the news all day if I'm going to watch F1 highlights later, but sometimes you just forget that you are avoiding it when the hourly news bulletin comes on.
I go for the fingers in the ears method, but that only works if they say "In the formula one race in China..." rather than starting off with, "Lewis Hamilton...". If they say a name at the top of the news, you know they have won.

Morons, they did this the other week as well. Pissed me right off.
Also it's still not up on iPlayer nearly 3 hours after the highlights programme aired.
So let me get this straight, they gave out the results last week and you still watched it again this week expecting them not to ?Also it's still not up on iPlayer nearly 3 hours after the highlights programme aired.
Do you read the same book more than once just to see if the ending has changed ?

I don't think it's stupid at all for the BBC to give out news.
It really is not their fault.
That's balls. It would be trivial to issue a warning beforehand and they used to do so. It really is not their fault.
A bit OT here, but I'm reminded of an occasion years ago: was the school's annual inter-house athletics match, big evening event, with all the parents out there supporting their kids.
That particular year, it coincided with an important England World Cup footy match, and the colleague in charge of announcing race results suddenly said, over the PA system, "For all you parents who are videoing the footy, intending to watch it when you get home, we've just heard the result, which is ....", and promptly announced the final score.

In my defence those who think I was asking for it
Literally As I turned on TV it was on BBC news and the lady presenter said without 'look away now"
Lewis Hamilton has made it 3 in a row closely followed by his team mate Nico Rosberg with Alonso in 3rd.
I had no time to take evasive action - dive behind sofa
Yes it's the news but it would mean not watching TV ,surfing the net or listening to radio until 2.30 not that easy.
Daft I may be but I think BBC giving up rights to F1 then announcing results before their own coverage "highlights" is dafter.
Re engines and noise we need Jordan decals back " Buzzin Hornets" more appropriate for the exhaust note.

I have sympathy for the OP, unintentionally finding out the result before you've had a chance to watch the race is very irritating. Just before the Melborne grand prix, I'd bought a new laptop which runs Windows 8.1. For those of you that don't know it, Windows 8.1 has an app-style splash page which presents you with the news, weather, e-mails etc when you boot up the machine. This didn't even cross my mind- I booted it up before watching the race and as soon as it started and found it's WiFi connection, the news page sprung up with a picture of Rosberg's ecstatic winning face. Try avoiding that! (and don't say "avoid starting the computer", as I was about to watch the race on the computer!)
All they have to do is use a slightly longer introduction to the headline - such as "And in today's Chinese Grand Prix.....". That should be enough for a person to
a) turn the device off
or
b) turn the volume down
or
c) dash out of the room with fingers in ears going "la la la"...
I've done all three - sometimes all at the same time.
What they often do is start the report by saying "Lewis Hamilton...." or "Sebastian Vettel..." - which is very, very unfair - and plain dumb if they are going to be showing the highlights within a few hours. You would almost think they are trying to STOP F1 fans watching the race on BBC.

I think part of the lack of empathy is that, over the years, many of us have been in that situation, not necessarily only for F1 but other sports as well.Derek Smith said:

If I'm anything to go by you develop a system and ignore sources that might give the answer away. I can't say for sure but, in the case of F1, I bet most systems include not viewing news outlets. F1 is big business and has a world wide audience so it is not going to be kept for the sports bit at the end.
