I am off there today with my 2 and 6 year old - I'm hoping they're as excited about it as I am smile

Any other PHers likely to be there?

Sorry to be picture heavy, but here's my take on it - A nice day out, older kids would have appreciated it more. It was very peaceful and meant I got a good look around - I may go on an open cockpit day next time smile

Looks good - just a shame some left outside to "weather"

Passed it on Sunday on my way back from and excellent day at York Dragway
and thought it would be good to go look around there again soon.
What did it cost to get in?

Cheers
Trickie

PS Loved the VW Beetle Jetcar at the dragway!!!!!

It's not expensive really - just don't expect a top notch, top of the range attraction - And take a picnic as the facilities are limited (there's an Asda up the road anyway).

It's £14.Something for a family ticket which I think is reasonable.

The shop stocks more Airfix models than I've seen anywhere too - I was tempted to buy one and I don't even build them (or have the skill - or patience for....)

James

Just realised you are talking about the SOUTH Yorkshire Air Museum
(I didn't know there even was such a place - so thanks)

I was mentioning the YORKSHIRE Air Museum at Elvington York
http://www.yorkshireairmuseum.org/

Think I need to visit both now!!!

The best one I have been to was the Air Museum at Newark
and luckily it was on an open cockpit day for their Vulcan!!!
One of the best 50p I have ever spent (for the cockpit tour bit)
http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/

I might start a TVR and PH tour of aircraft museums and establishments.

We already regularly have joint events at Sherburn Aero Club and also Breighton Airfield
which are always well supported - Wings and Wheels.

Cheers
Richard

I've been to all 3, personally I would rate Elvington as the best and if you're there at the right time you can snap a photo like this smile -

I've never been to South Yorkshire Air museuem but I have been to Yorkshire Air Museum which is excellent. They have fairly big grounds. My 2 year old ran around while I looked at the planes.

Theres a victor a nimrod, a couple of bucaneers Tornado a halifax, dacota. A lot of their stuff is started and the victor is taxi'd occasionally etc its well worth a visit.

Also Newark (just down the A46) is well worth a visit - shackleton, Vulcan, etc. Theres a fair bit more inside at Newark too.

If you fancy going further affield East Kirkby is well worth a trip. They have a running lancaster which taxi's - you can even have a ride in it if you book months in advance and have enough £. They do an airshow and props and pistons which is a car show with a small airshow and lancaster taxis too.

If you still follow me on twitter (@darrenleenewman) I can send you a few pics of Newark as I've been recently.

It is a brilliant museum and not just for the big stuff either-the small buildings featuring air gunnery are fascinating. It can be an eerie place- the old control tower on a winter's day with a recording of radio instructions to crews is spine tingling. My Uncle John Keys died in a Halifax bomber over Northern France so it's a bit of a pilgrimage for me ; one of the roads at Elvington is named after Mynarski , who got a VC in the same raid in which John (after whom I am named ) was killed.
