Ouch. When did tyres get so expensive?

When 19" wheels started seeming like a sensible thing to have on a 4 banger diesel family saloon?

No wonder people opt for budget, even though it's potentially false economy, when mid range stuff can be £120 to £150 per corner... Had me looking at the cheapies as well. Maybe two premium on the back and two budgets up front is ok?
What size tyres are you looking for? HertsBiker said:

Doesn't sound like a good idea, I'd rather have decent part-worn tyres all round.Johnnytheboy said:

This.Commonality has a lot to do with it.
My DC5 has a standard size of 215/45/17, certain ranges don't come in that size and are more expensive if they do.
However the rim takes 225/45/17 and in that you get Bridgestone and Yokohama Advan AO80R's for £120 a corner and Bridgestone RE070's for £80 a corner.
The 225 size is standard audi A3 rim size.
So best bet is don't get the flash optional rims, but as has been said 19" as standard is bananas

If they're that expensive on the wheels you have, why not buy some smaller wheels? It might well work out cheaper over the course of a few years and will almost certainly make the car handle and ride better too.
Unfortunately the OP has given us no info on tyre size, wheel size, car ? So it's hard to steer him (forgive the pun) toward a decent buy. Really annoys me this kinda thing.jamieduff1981 said:
I just paid £139/corner (I think) for 245/40R18 Michelin Pilot Super Sports online.
What sizes of tyre are you looking for where mid-range tyres exceed that?
That's nearly (235s) my size! How much for fitting on top of that? Then it comes out nearly 150 a corner, surely? What sizes of tyre are you looking for where mid-range tyres exceed that?
