Guys,
I hope this doesn't break any forum rules, if so Mods, I apologise and feel free to delete.

Do you know any youngsters, keen on engineering, IT, Defence and are now looking to start their career with a valuable apprenticeship?

I work within Bae Systems Naval Ships, in the Combat Systems Business Unit. This year we have developed for the first time an apprenticeship scheme specifically for Combat Systems. It has taken quite some time to set up and get the right college on board and the right modules identified within the course, hence the delay in starting the recruitment phase.

But the recruitment window is now open and will be until 30th June. This recruitment window is for a planned start date of September this year.

In a nutshell succesful applicants will be trained in all elements of Combat Systems Engineering. Focussing on all IT area's, networking, Network Security & some programming etc.

The first year of the appenticeship will be spent at the North East Surrey College of Technology (NESCOT) in Epsom. During which time succesful applicants will recieve a very competitive salary to start them off. During the 2nd and 3rd years, they will work at our sites for a number of 6 month placements. Primarily in Frimley or New Malden, but will have the opportunity to take placements at our other sites across the country, working alongside our experienced Combat Systems Engineers. During this time they will attend NESCOT one day a week for college based learning. In the 4th and final year, they will be working at our sites full time while completing their final assessments and gaining their vendor qualifications.

During the apprenticeship they'll achieve HNC Computing and Systems Development, HND Computing and Systems Development, NVQ/SVQ Level 4 Diploma in Professional Competence for IT and Telecoms Professionals. On top of this they'll attain a large number of highly sought after Vendor Qualifications, CCNA, CISCO, Windows, VMWare etc.

The salary being offered is highly competitive and once completed they will be earning very close to the salary our graduates earn. In fact they'll probably earn more than any other apprentice in the UK. On top of that they'll have the opportunity to work on some very exciting projects, such as the CMS-1 Combat System, fitte to Type 45 Destroyers, elements of the Queen Elizabeth Class Mission System, during the up-coming Set-to-Work/Commissioning phase and the Type 26 Global Combat Ship's Combat System.

Bae Systems Naval Ships existing apprenticeship schemes have achieved an OFSTED rating of outstanding and we're confident that this scheme will achieve the same rating. On top of that one of our Naval Ships apprentices won the apprentice of the year award for the UK and two of our existing apprentices (that we (Combat Systems) poached from Naval Ships) came first and second last year in the Naval Ships apprenticeship award scheme.

Now for the hard part, in order to be in with a chance the applicants must have as a minimum. 5 GCSE's at grade C or above. PLUS A Level Maths + 2 other A Levels in Science or Technology Subjects or an Extended BTEC National in an engineering or computing discipline.

Potential Candidates can apply via;
www.baesystems.com/apprentices

We are after 6 apprentices for this scheme, a number of things will take place between now and when they start in order for us to find the best candidates, most of which are out of my hands (in the interests of fairness).

I'm running the recruitment for this apprenticeship, so will be happy to answer further questions if I can.

Well, we aren't allowed to discriminate against age, I wouldn't want to anyway. So if you meet the entry qualifications you can apply no problem.

For someone older, my concern if it were me applying would be working with, fitting in with, socialising etc and spending a year at college with 5 other's who are all 18-22.

But, if you have the necessary entry criteria quals and want to apply, I'd say go for it. It's a great package that's been put together for anyone really.
