How desirable is this to prospective new employers for someone who works in IT?

Thanks.

Given the current version is ITIL V3 I'd say better than not having it at all. ITIL Foundation is a very straightforward exam - mostly on terminology, that pretty much anyone could pass with a few hours study, I think you really need to be at the intermediate or Managing/Expert level to see anyone taking notice of the qualification itself.

Agreed, but do ITIL v3.

Are you looking to work in a service desk / operations role?

We would consider it a "nice to have"

I already work on a service desk, but I am wanting to change companies in the next 6 months and want to give myself as good a chance as possible. I'd like to do more operations stuff, but my role at the moment makes that impossible. I do desk side support, but there is also remote support, and the operations side etc are in Ireland and I am in London.

Thanks, I hope so! I have very little by way of certs etc, so I know I am going to struggle to find a better paid job / better job than what I am doing at the moment frown

As a hiring manager it would be a nice to have for me but I'd much rather see your technical ability than something that doesn't take very long to pass.

Thanks Scott. I assume you'd like to see the certs to back up the technical ability also?

There is a similar ethos where I work. We'll drag someone in for interview, see if their face fits and set them a skills test.

One of our more recent recruits only had 2 years IT experience, but a world of customer service experience. Keen to learn, with the right aptitude makes a big difference. smile

Having a few certificates can help get through the door though.

Hopefully when I start looking for a new job the hiring manager will have the same ethos as yourself and Scott.

This. I'm a contractor so change jobs often. A lot will specify ITIL, Prince2, ISEB etc, when that have no need.

Its far more likely to get you through the door than being good at your job. Its used as a binary filter before you even get to speak to somone. The Person doing the first sift will probably not be the person doing the actual hiring so no matter how good you look on your CV, the lack of a 3 day course and a simple exam my see your CV in the bin.

I'm doing this in September. I don't even work a helpdesk but all the IT people have to be familiar with the termonology, standards and practices. I don't mind as it all helps tart up your CV.

Most of my clients follow ITIL to some extent & often ask that our team are at least familiar with the concepts. It certainly can't hurt having it (unless you suddenly start evangelising ITIL wink ). Despite all of our work being project based I would rather invest in one of my team to qualify in ITIL than PRINCE2

Do V3. Though be warned, its the duller than a night with John Major.

I'm a bit of an ITIL Fan (I just need to do Managing Across the LifeCycle to get my ITIL Expert qualification. Doing an OU degree has been keeping me busy so I've not had chance to get round and do it.

If I was you, I'd do ITIL V3 Foundation, and then the ITIL Service Operation Lifecycle module. That gives a good breakdown of the Service Operation Processes and Functions and shows you know those in much more depth.

Any recommendations of where to the courses? I am based in London / Aylesbury.

Thanks.

I did most of my ITIL courses through Fox IT at a Wokingham training base. I think its now a QA centre, and I was happy with the training I had there.
