I'm looking to upgrade the brakes on my '05 WRX. At present I have Aztec performance disc's and pads (kevlar). I'd like bigger disc's but not wheels, anyone got any idea's or done similar?

Are you on 17" wheels?

AP 6-pots and 330 discs. If you've got 18" wheels you can have 354 or 362mm discs I think.

I've personally never used godspeed brakes - they have a good reputation for refurbing calipers but I've heard some horror stories about quality of their own products.

I've got STI 17"s. Really impressed with the Godspeed set up, a bit concerned that there are some negatives but will have a good a scout around for info smile

Braided hoses and some high quality pads will do you more good per £ than spending thousands on a new kit. For the power of a WRX it's not worth it. To give you some idea, we changed the front callipers on the Forester for some WRX 4pots and after putting some better discs and pads along with braided hoses it has better feel and stopping power than my STI.

I've suffered a bit with brake fade in the past even with uprated disc's and pads. I do the occasional track day and think the bigger brakes will allow me to spend more time on the track... I'm also hoping to get the car up to 300ish bhp (from the 274 it has at the mo) for next years rolling road event so will be looking at braided hoses too.

I haven't heard anything negative about Godspeed. My mate had the big brake set up on his 475bhp Sti and said they felt great and held up well.

Sorry to de-rail slightly, but what would be the limits of power people would be happy to run in a MY00 UK Turbo with standard 4-pot Subaru calipers? Mine were refurbed last year and have newish discs and pads. I think the car stops plenty well enough for road use at its current level (c.240bhp). I was thinking around 300bhp would be okay, I doubt I'd ever go beyond that. No power mods planned immediately anyway.

With the right pads those calipers are fine on classics, it's the 200kg heavier newage cars that have the biggest struggle with them. If you want a classic brake upgrade I'd be tempted to look for some twin pot rears from a newage and fit them with the brackets. Conversely I found even rebuilt 4 pots lacking on a newage car with standard power (and uprated pads) which is why I am now on AP's!

Thanks for the responses, which pads are well thought of for the Subaru 4-pots?

I did 300+ pretty hard miles of the Scottish Highlands at the weekend and some more stopping power would have been most welcome, especially given most other cars I was with were new-age cars running brembos or even 6/8 pot AP/K-sport setups.

My discs/pads are only 10k old (front pads 5k) so it won't be for a wee while that I change them but would be good to know for future reference how to optimise one's setup with the limitation of 16" wheels.
