6D focus issue

Hi All.

A chum of mine is having an issue with his 6D as follows:

'Problem is that autofocus does not work in anything other than fully auto mode'

He's quite experienced so it shouldn't be anything too obvious and he's had a fairly extensive look into it I believe. Any suggestions?

What button is he (trying!) to use? Half press of the shutter, or the AF-ON button? It may be set to one or the other.

That happened to me! Hadn't used the 40D for a little while, slapped on a lens to snap something in the garden....but it just wouldn't autofocus unless in Auto. Took a while to dawn on me that I had set it to back button focus the last time I'd used it - felt a right idiot

Seems he can get autofocus using the af-on but not the normal shutter button.

Wasn't sure about back button focus...
