Decided last night that I was going to do a big ride. Upped my miles to 100miles a week for the last 4 weeks and started to feel much fitter. Done about 700miles this year so not a huge amount.

So today I went for it and did 105miles solo. The 100miles took just over 5hrs 30mins averaging 18mph - it wasn't particularly hilly I did 4800ft of climbing.

Chuffed to bits and glad I got out in the lovely weather!

I have the chamce to do this tmrw which is a total first for me. Did u eat during? Im not sure what I may need as I have rarely ridden over fifty miles in one go and this is a group ride with no stops.

I didn't have breakfast before I went as it was early so I had a stash of SIS energy gels and a bar. So I just took one of those each 40-50mins which kept me going strong. It's the first time I've ever used energy gels and to be fair I am mighty impressed.

Felt brilliant, let off a big shout at 100miles! My post ride milkshake has never tasted so good.

I called my younger and much fitter brother when I was half way round (he had a heavy night and didn't want to come out early). He was motivated by my ride and is currently out doing almost the exact same route. He called on a piss break at 60miles and he'd averaged 19.6mph to that point - be interesting to see how he finishes up.

But dizzee get on out there, feels good when you are done! BUT make sure you take enough food/energy or you'll be done by 60-70miles.

well done, i did my first ton on good friday. had a stop off for some food at 50 miles, but more importantly i found i needed some water. just plain old water, as i was getting sick of overly sweet drinks. once i'd had a bottle at about 70 miles i was good to the end. 100 miles is a long way, but felt great to tick off another milestone.

Nice one - feels like a proper achievement. Now set your sights higher - Fred Whitton challenge next year ;-)

I'd take flapjacks and/or fig rolls - small but full of good stuff and fairly easy to unwrap on the move. Gels too but I think the effect is less noticeable over time. Would expect a couple of stops on that kind of distance.
Good average speeds on solo rides that far, OP!

Good effort fella, first few take some prep but won't be long and you will be able to knock out centuries without too much prep or thought! Biggest challenge for me is boredom, tends to set in about 80-ish miles!

Main thing is to keep eating and keep drinking, if you feel hungry or thirsty you have already left it too late to eat or drink! Always better to go home with a couple of unopened flapjacks in your jersey rather than run out wink

I did 340 miles in 3 days last week (helping a mate on a massive charidy ride), kept eating little but often and taking a swig every few miles, weather, road surface, bruised seat bones and vibration through the wrists were the biggest challenge.

I am hoping to do another 4-500 miles in 4 or 5 days this week supporting the last few legs of his ride through Spain into Gibraltar.

Good effort with the consecutive rides.

I can see that it can get boring although today I was just motivated to do it. I don't think it will be something I do every weekend!

Thanks sir! Now you have done it once I would recommend setting yourself a target of doing a century every month or 6 weeks, the more you di it the easier it becomes!

Once again, well done!

Well done OP! Couldn't have picked a better day for it yesterday. I did my second ever century, similar pace to you but only half the climbing. After advice from people on here, I've bought a few High5 Race boxes and used the gels and energy drink tablets yesterday, and finished the 103 miles with no cramps or aches (other than shoulders). I used to be a bit sceptical, thinking they were a bit of a gimmick - but they really work.

Edit: Do you, too, have amusing tan-lines today?

They are awful, they have been developing over the last few weeks.

I have just been out on 15-20mile recovery ride (gentle spin) and it looks like I have another new set of lines from the jersey I was wearing today!! Going to look like a right pillock in the summer!

Well done OP!

I've managed 2 now. The second was much easier than the first, mentally as well as physically!

Aiming for another soon and then 150miles!

As the rules say, "It doesn't get easier, you just get faster!" biggrin

Also did my first today, very pleased I did it and I learnt the importance of food, despite having a decent bowl of porridge + banana + 3 gels and 3 energy bars on route, I was almost out of energy by around 80 miles. Owing to the teamwork by the 5 of us riding it and determination I managed to keep a bonk at bay and complete the 100 miles at a great average, and promptly had a sandwich and bag of crisps once I had finished. Next time more food needed for sure. I was surprised at how much I ate, never thought of it.

Didn't drink as much as I thought, only a bottle and a bit from my two bottle cages.

Nice thing too was there was only a 5 min stop a the coast before we set off back, and a brief 10 min interlude around 25 miles in when one of the guys bike broke and had to head home on the train.

Glad I did it, learnt a lot about the next time. Also amazed at how boredom kicks in even in a group. I had had enough mentally by about 75 miles and I think being in a familiar group just kept me in the zone. Not sure I would find it as do able on my own.

Also amazed at the amount of climbing that mounts up, over 5000 feet, although apart from a handful of Cat 4 climbs I didn't feel it was very hilly.

Well done chap!

You certainly eat a lot, I had 7 gels and a bar overall I think. Plus I was the same and didn't drink much - I think that's the gels?

How long did it take in the end?

I can finally join this club now!! well I think so anyway. Today was the first time I've done 100km ride.

It was a wiggle event in the wye valley. Just over 6000ft of climbing too. I had only planned on riding the short route but ended up doing the standard. I felt strong for the first 50 miles but some endless climbs really tested me, Now I've done it I just want to push myself further. I was shattered after mind. After a stop in Tesco on the way home for food by the time I got home I had to have a nap!!

I guess that was just due to my body not being used to that length of ride?

I don't know whether you made a typo but we're on about 100miles, so 160km!

Regardless 100km with 6000ft must have a been a decent ol' ride.
