So it would appear the 50 limit and roadworks have finally disappeared leaving us with a few gantries with the familiar square displays over each lane, and some big black screens on a pole over the hard shoulder in other places.

What's the deal? Are they specs or digital speed cameras? And more inportantly, are they live? Saw one going batst crazy today flashing loads of stuff, on the anticlock carriageway midway between Clackett Lane and the M26 junction.

There's a thread over on Speed, Plod & the law about this, but sadly I'm a PH member for less than 2 weeks, so can't contribute.....
So anyway - I was on my bike coming from Sevenoaks to J6 (A22) on M25, Bank Holiday Monday, about 1pm. Was riding at approx. 70mph in lane 2, behind a BMW. A couple of cars in front, maybe 100 yards, seemed to set off an almighty great flash from the nearside of the road, approaching Clacket Lane services. As I went past, it flashed again. Didn't look like traffic in front was speeding, I certainly wasn't - not sure if the flash was for lanes 3 or 4 or what.....
The only information I can find about this, apart from newspaper scare stories about 'stealth cameras', suggests that the cameras may not yet be commissioned or calibrated properly & I have yet to see any reports on people getting NIPs in post. Any thoughts or other information?????

One of the members on TRO (Type R Owners) works for the Highways Agency in the control room for these cameras. I assume this link can be viewed without being registered.

Hope this works........

I got an email from a colleague last week saying about stealth speed cameras that have recently been installed on the M25 near Seven Oaks. Being as though there's always emails flying around about speed cameras I didn't take much notice.

Today while travelling along the M25 between the M11 and the A1 I noticed a double flash going off behind me. At the next gantry on the opposite carriage a little grey camera completely off the road and high up on the gantry was flashing away.

So be very careful on the M25 as they are very hard to spot. luckily I was in dawdle mode and was below the speed limit.

I spotted one at nearly every gantry between the M11 and the A1 which is the opposite side of the M25 to Seven Oaks so they could be everywhere!!

I shall shed some light on these cameras.

Basically they aren't stealth cameras but have been installed as a safety measure as part of two schemes on the M25. These schemes are known as 'All Lane Running' which basically refers to sections of the motorway where the hardshoulder has been removed and replaced with a running lane.

If speeds are displayed in these sections, they will have a red ring. This red ring makes it legally enforcable speed rather then advisory speeds that are set on other parts of the motorway network.
