Afternoon all

I've only just started to get involved in my 02 restoration and it's become apparent I'm making too much noise during the rust removal process with angle grinders etc, so I'm thinking of getting it blasted.

Of course I'll strip the car and give it to them but I want them to do the underside too, so should I make up a rotisserie or just a dolly frame on wheels? Will either method be ok during trailered transport?

Thanks

What like this... mine last week.

The Rotisserie was the best thing I did with this restoration, not necessarily for the blasting process, but just for the work before that and from now on.

Just never, never, never remove rust from a surface you want to paint later. It's almost impossible to prevent the marks left from showing/spoiling the paint finish. Blast or chemicaly remove it.

So do you have to make one or can you buy one / get one made? Will need to have one for MGB as I can see the usefulness!

Made a rotisserie for my MGB recently using 2no heavy duty engine stands + some extra steel. Can comfortably and safely take 1.3-1.4tonnes. It has paid for itself many times over. PM me for more info'...and definitely no need to pay the silly prices some Co's ask for.

Hi guys. Thanks for the interest.

What sort of money does blasting command? This was supposed to be a budget build. Don't think it will be from now on!

PM'd you by the way Flatinfourth

Doing alright thanks Mitch. No further on with the Alfa sadly. Very impressed with what you've done with yours so far!
Hope you had a good day at NAD. Was everyone on good form?

Mine cost £740.00 including transport and priming. More than I expected, I had stripped a fair bit and all the floor pans are new too. Seems to be some distortion as well.
It's saved me weeks of unpleasant work though and focused my attention on getting the upper body done to a higher standard than I intended when I started. the Bill for body panels is growing mind rolleyes

Thanks for the replies lads

If I can afford blasting, I'd want the process to show me what needed cutting out. If the blast process leaves holes, then there wasn't enough metal in the first place. And it needs to get rid of the rust! I'll have to watch a video or two on YouTube about Aqua blasting.

£400 quid must equate to £500 for a BMW 02 surely!

It's going to depend on how much he's taking off. If you are expecting the blaster to take off all the underseal from the underside including inside the arches and the whole top coat and several millimetres of filler, it will cost more than just the top coat.
A 2002 is pretty much the same size for size as my Alfa, so pro-rata a bit more than £400.00 I'd say. Also add in the time taken to to collect and deliver if you can't do that yourself.
It IS worth it though, if I'd have had the confidence to do it earlier I would have done, in my case this rebuild has been a long process and only recently has it become clear that it will be successful in the end. I've avoided spending large lump sums until I was sure.

Dipping <shudders>

How do you get paint back between the panel layers unless you E-coat? Most restoreres don't. Dip at your peril - horror stories abound.

This +1

OP, you do have another tried and tested way. It involves a good amount of elbow grease but the results are superb and do not damage any panel. Make/buy yourself a rotisserie. For the underside remove stonechip and waxoyl with white spirit/scraper and a lot of tissue [go to Screwfix for these]. For the rest of the body use Craftsman Nitromors to remove all the paint inside and out. I know a number of good restorers who do this and have used this technique twice myself; it's very effective. Work on one panel at a time + it's useful to cover each panel with newspaper once the Nitromors has been worked in; much of the paint will come away with the Newspaper when removed. Clean with panel wipe, do not use water[!] Once finished/panel spotlessly clean work in a zinc acid etch to each panel/the whole car to stop any surface rust.

You'll be left with original undamaged panels that can be assessed for what areas need reworking. Another plus is that it's a 'clean' controlled process so no dust and no noise. Be sure to wear correct PPE...
