I am a TVR virgin who has decided to take the plunge into ownership, I really want a V8 but cannot decide wether to look for a wedge convertible or V8S for my budget of approx £10K. Which would be the better car for the money and what are the major differences between the two?

If you go for wedge try for a late 400SE, The V8S is smaller lighter slightly quicker (better power to weight ratio) although not quite as powerful as 400. The V8S cost approx £23,000 in 91' the 400SE £27,000 both are classics, and as good as each other, its down to personal taste, test drive both.

Nah , go for the V8S less in yer face , had mine for 18 months, daily drive (apart from snow and serious rain) and not one major problem. A lot tougher than i imagined.

PS mine is up for grabs as i have just got myself a new toy , so for £9.5k she is all yours. Faster than a 4.0 Chim !!!!!! (well mine is anyway)

Now you know THAT MAKES SENSE.

Mine is also for sale - although I have to keep mine until 11th Aug as I am going to Duxford in it.

I am part funding the tamora with the proceeds.

Go for a big bad Wedge
Try a local meeting and get ride/look. Anyone near you with either? Always liked the look and interior of a V8S though. Still, a good while before I tire of the Wedge bug.

Definitely go for a Wedge (and the "460" above does look very tasty!) - I've been running them for 9 years now and have never had one let me down. (Not that I'm biaised or anything....)

Although 2 Sheds is right about power to weight ratio its worth pointing out that there can be a significant variation in engine power even among seemingly identical cars so dont let that put you off. My 400 was just a gnats chuff slower than my little brothers Chimaera. To be honest, drive a few of each and pick what you like best - they are both great cars!

There was also a very similar thread to this a few weeks ago so trawl back and you might get a bit more inspiration! Good Hunting!

The V8S makes a lovely noise and looks like a 'proper' british sports car. If that's what you want, then you won't go wrong with a V8S.

In comparison to the V8S, the Wedges are animals!!!! Subtle ? No Way! - even by TVR standards .

The big Wedge sound track is like nothing else, and the cartoon caricature looks make it look fantastically over-the-top.

Me biased - surely not....

Thanks for your answers I think I am leaning towards the V8S as it sounds as if it is more of the true British sports car. I will also try and get up to Duxford and look at all the wonderfull tiv's

Keep an eye out at Duxford for a certain immaculate blue V8S from Cambs region! It will probably be the one with its bonnet up, because the engine bay puts even mine to shame. Sigh.
