I've just had my renewal from the AA for £145, so i rang up and told them thy dit for 80 something last year, so the reduced it to 90. I asked them why they tried to double it every year and why they didn't offer the lower price from the start as reward for loyalty and not calling them out. The guy said they were looking at that. Anyway, i rang the RAC and he quoted £78, which got me to thinking which is the best They both insure the driver not the vehicle, which is ideal for me, as we have a van, a family car and i also have 2 road legal classic cars.
Should i switch to the RAC or stay with the AA ?
What are your experiences, good and bad ?

You could play each at their own game by not renewing and the other on alternative years. Alternatively it means a battle each year at renewal time.

Unfortunately these organisations are run by accountants now and there is no such thing as benefits to loyal customers.

Which is why I say offer them the same loyalty they offered you, ie F all.

So you're with the AA now so move to RAC.

Next year at renewal time move to AA.

Then repeat.

You might want to google Quidcoyes

That's actually what i was thinking of doing, so they dont keep taking me for granted. Also I dont personally care for the AA's stance on speed cameras. Nottm is covered in the things but the roads are in appalling condition.

Another thumbs-up for AutoAid. Loads of threads on it, including a recent one if you search. Highly recommended.

Green Flag give you a 50% discount on the next years premium if you don't call them out the previous year, or if they fail to get to you within 1 hour if you do call them out.

So what I am saying is neither.

AA all the way for me - I was with the RAC a few years ago and my car broke down on an island in Peterborough (a reasonable size city). It took them 3.5 to get a van out to me - I cancelled my membership afterwards and have been with the AA every since. I play hardball at renewal time and always get a price that I am happy with. Plus they do breakdown repair cover which pays for the cost of parts in the event of a breakdown redface)

AA tried to jack up my renewal quote massively aftre the first year so I cancelled and went elsewhere, then they kept ringing me multiple times even after I'd explained why I'd moved.

Needless to say I won't touch them with a bargepole.

I think you'd be best off basing your decision on the service you'll get when you're in the s**t and not the price.

Never had any issues with the AA when I've been in a dangerous place.

Been with the AA for donkeys years(12?) and so far, never called them out so I cannot comment on their service. However, their tactic of overpricing pisses me right off, even though, every year they drop it back down. This year was ridiculous and I nearly didn't renew at all. It's only 'cos I'm lazy and reactionary that I did.

Would rather stick pins in my eyes than use the AA again, after they left me and my six month old daughter stranded by the motorway for six hours on one of the hottest days of the year last summer. C**ts.

Can't comment on the AA, but I've called the RAC out twice.

First time I told them it was a bike on the phone, and when the patrol van turned up an hour and a half later he was a bit annoyed to find it was a bike as they have no way of transporting them, so I had to wait another couple of hours for a flatbed.

Second time it took me 15 minutes to get through to them on the phone so I knew I was off to a bad start, it then took well over an hour for a patrol to get to me (it was rush hour on a Friday afternoon I suppose). Admittedly it wasn't their fault that my car can't be towed or put on his towing dolly so I had to wait another hour and half for a flatbed rolleyes

On the plus side joint membership is cheaper than we'd be paying for the AA, and as its something you don't really expect to use I'd rather save the money than get a speedy service when I do need them.

Don't know if they've changed, but once with a run of car troubles (compounded by bad advice from the AA guys who turned up) we discovered that the AA didn't consider my wife had paid for a year's cover as we thought, but rather a maximum of 4 call outs to be taken within a year.

Will never use them again.

I use RAC these days as they automatically cover me on my motorbike.

What a bizarre thread. They are exactly the same but with different colours.

If you want to pay over the odds to avoid a particular company because of one poor experience then more fool you, especially given the other company is equally likely to either get it right or mess it up.
