Anybody else struggling with money? I seem to spend all my money on buying ammo and creating health syringes meaning I'm constantly broke. Am I missing something?

get green leaves and they will automatically get you syringes, searching dead bodies get you ammo.

Indeed. Also on many missions there are ammo crates or piles of ammo just lying around. If you accidentally shoot them then they go off like fireworks (so if you see the fireworks you can say "arses. I needed that ammo").

Also, some missions (I think the Armed Escort missions) refill all your ammo as a reward.

If you loot every body you come across, open every crate you find, and skin every animal you kill, and never buy syringes but instead craft them from green leaves, then you will have more money than you know what to do with in no time.

Incidentally, you can get a perk that harvests two leaves from every plant. So every green leaf you pick gets automatically converted to a health syringe.

Edit: Earlier on in the game, when money is more tight, then favour an Assault Rifle as most Royal Guards you encounter will be armed with one so you will pick up more Assault Rifle ammo than anything else. If you favour a LMG or SMG then ammo will be far more scarce as fewer enemies will be carrying those.

I've been playing this for a few hours and I can't make my mind up if it's that good or not. The graphics are top notch, but it's such a fiddly, faffy, overcomplicated game with far too many options/ideas/choices/endless upgrades to this, that, everything under the sun. It's like they had too many ideas and so it comes over as being far too clever for its own good. I'm think I'm erring on the side that it's a pretty poor game really. There's just too much to do.

What kind of games do you normally play? Are you used to more "on the rails" type games and are new to Open World / Sandbox type games, maybe?

(Genuine question, btw)

I think that's the problem. I was not sure I'd like open world/sandbox games and I think I'm right.

For example, I really liked Wolfenstein:The New Order and Bioshock:Infinate for example. There's a specific aim and you follow it, so it's very linear and you see your progression., but he sandbox approach the cocks me off. I look at the map and wonder "what am I supposed to do now then ?2 i.e. too many options.

Both great games, but they were all "main quest" and no side quests. If you want to play Far Cry 4 that way then you can, although you'll be missing out on a lot of other stuff. You should see markers on your map that direct you to the next part of the story. They might be the Golden Path's symbol (which is the same symbol that flashes up when the game saves) or might be "A" for Amita or "S" for Sabal. In alls case their description will say they are a Campaign Quest.
Often they will also show up as an arrow pointer in your peripheral vision.

However, it's worth taking some time out to do some hunting to craft the various upgrades to your carrying capacity, and also hacking the bell towers and freeing the outposts is an ongoing quest too, which opens the map up.

So you can set your own goals (eg. "I am going to go hunting", "I am going to concentrate on Bell towers for now", etc) or you can push on with the main quest. Or alternate. It's up to you.

Thanks for the comments. I'd spotted the letters and shining path symbol on the map and it looked like these were the things to do next.

What really annoyed me was when I started playing, I did the first little bit, then went up the first bell tower, then saved and exited before I completed the tower. Then when I restarted the game, the tower mission had been thrown away as the current objective. I just wanted to carry on from somewhere near to where I left off, but oh no, it was having none of it !

I've played the last Borderlands and at least it was very clear what the main mission was and what the side missions were, so you could leave the side missions if you like and just follow the main story. But with FC4 I don't think it's overly obvious what you should do next. And maybe that's the problem, there is no definite answer as what you are supposed to do next because it's open world.

That's a very fair criticism. The "save" feature of FC3 & FC4 is absolutely pants. It sort of takes the ideas of both saves and checkpoints and then somehow contrives to combine them into the worst of both worlds.

There's very much a case of "I've started so I must finish" about a mission, even assaulting an outpost or shutting down a Bell tower.

If you have just bagged a load of skins or loot, it's best to explicitly save. If you get killed or otherwise have to stop playing, you will return somewhere else (nearby if killed, or if you exit the game and then come back later, then either at a liberated outpost or the nearest liberated bell tower) but at least you will still have all that loot. If you hadn't explicitly saved you'd lose that too.
And, as you found out, if you are partway through a bell tower or outpost, you have to start again.

It's rather crap.

I think it's more to do with the fact that FC4 is a bit rubbish in that regard. If you play a Bethesda open world game like Fallout3, Fallout: New Vegas, Skyrim, etc., then you can call up a list of open quests and select which one you want to make primary. So it's not really a case of it being unclear because it's open world, but more a case of it being unclear because Ubisoft are a bit pants. smile

I thought it was very clear in which direction you need to go for the main story...

Yellow game logo = main, then S or A within that story line

L, H, Y, B etc etc = side

Everything else are up to the player to choose from

Not much difference compare to other open world games...

I agree that the save system leaves much to be desired, but if it had quicksave, the game would be a lot less challenging - you could just reload if you were detected while softening up an outpost. I would, however, like to have quicksave to deal with the Shangri-La missions as they are a PITA.

I have to agree with this.

The last two games I've played are Farcry 4 and Assassin's Creed Rogue, both Ubisoft titles, and I haven't been particularly impressed with either. They're certainly both inferior to Skyrim, GTA V, Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas.

You, me and the rest of the game-playing world. Don't hold your breath though, it'll be a long while yet.

Enjoy this while you're waiting.

LOL yes. I already saw that and wanted to show others but didn't feel I could necrothread the Fo3 thread and I don't post on the Skyrim thread any more. It's absolutely brilliant though. hehe

Anyway, back to FC4... anyone else think that the Bomb Disposal missions are nothing of the sort? They're no different to any other "don't get detected" stealth mission only you have to click on a glowing yellow boxes rather than killing people.

Regarding saving the game - to ensure that I keep everything I've earned I always fast travel to an outpost, quicksell the contents of my loot bag and top up my Ammo - the game "autosaves" after that. I then save and exit.

I've been caught out too many times doing it any other way - losing skins you've collected is probably the most annoying.

I tried the sneaking in and deactivate while doing these missions, but I always get spotted...

So I now hide as far as possible, snipe them all, then take my time deactivating them

I gave it another chance yesterday for about 2 hours and I've given up with it. It's so bloody boring with all that endless going down paths etc with nothing much happening. Plus creeping around trying not to be detected - how boring can you get ? Everything is so slow and tedious. 44 of the Queen's pounds wasted there I feel.

No offence, but maybe you just prefer games that lead you by the hand and spoonfeed you?
