Evening all

Collected my new Tuscan today and very impressed with the way it drive and feels, massive I
Improvement to my old chimaera. However a couple of issues.

Car smoking when hot idling which stops once you drive away.. Wasn't doing it on test drive but has just been serviced, not sure if is been over filled with oil

Secondly, intermittent EFI warning on dash, not sure I these are related.

Both issues occurred once I had driven the 60 miles back from the dealer. I have emailed the dealer and expect them to be fixed under warranty, but wanted an idea of what could be the problem..

Cheers.

What code are you getting on the warning ? There is a list of them on mytuscan. I have a persistent Code C on start up and am told its a glitch in the firmware and trying to clear it for good would likely cause other issues in the display. Not too encouraging but if you know what its trying to diagnose you can check the physical systems. In my case the cooling fans work as they should and the coolant level is fine.

Smoking when hot, which then disappears when you pull away is most likely due to valve guide/seal wear. Hot oil, which will likely be at its thinnest will be passing the valve into the bores.. I had this.. I could physically wiggle a couple of the valves upon inspection.

Has it been rebuilt previously?

Not noticed any codes, I'll check tonight.

Yes smoking from exhaust, and had a power rebuild in 2003 at 10300miles, now has 42k on the clock.

Thanks for responses so far.

In 2003 that was more than likely warranty work power was performing for TVR. At that point Power were being supplied parts by the factory (the same ones which the original issues stemmed from).

As far as I'm aware they had not started really establishing their own rebuild program using the the improved quality parts specified by themselves.. believe that came in around 2005/2006.

The rebuild would have likely consisted of either simply replacing the head for a new factory unit or the cams and followers. The guides would'nt have been replaced at that mileage. Mine has suffered a similar fate.

Sorry to be negative, but I would start communicating with the dealer by email, not phone, print everything off, and keep it. Just as a precaution.

Re EFI fault this will be in the history log. Check using connected laptop & software if you can or ask dealer to do same. If it clears with button press then it suggests fleeting spike but maybe a sensor breaking dowm. Good Luck & Welcome to Tuscan Grinning. Dave

Have been emailing the dealer and spoken to him so I have everything in writing just incase, but he is a well respected trader in the TVR world.

He has just said to see how it goes over the weekend and if still bad he will arrange to collect and do what is needed.

Wondered if I should get it independently checked?

Ask the dealer if they'll agree to Dom inspecting the engine. If it's good Dom will then put his own warranty on it, if bad then you start negotiations with the selling company.

Hopefully it's nothing much, welcome to the world of Tuscaneering!

Hopefully see you around, the Cambs TVRCC meet up on the third Thursday of every month at a roving location at the moment, no decision yet made where the next one will be, but just check the TVRCC Cambs website for details.

All the best!

Quick update, smoke mainly coming from drivers side exhaust which is sottied up a fair bit so could be simply a fueling issue, anyway it's off to Dom on Friday to get diagnosed and sorted.

Be nice to get it back up and running, already become very attached to it and a far far superior car the the chimaera. IMHO
