Had a problem a couple of months ago, car suddenly started losing coolant and warning lights came on. Spent a week with Audi who diagnosed it as a broken water pump, which was replaced along with a host of other parts impacted by the leak including new cambelt etc. All has been well since, until this week when the warning light lit up again and sure enough coolant below the minimum level.

It;s going back into Audi for fixing, it's under warrarnty thankfully. Any ideas what it could be, is this a common issue? It's in an Audi A1 if it makes any difference.

I haven't heard of this fault before or seen it come through the workshops. We've run a few 1.6 TDIs in different cars and none of them have suffered from it.

Audi still haven't sorted their game out entirely when it comes to water pumps, the latest engine to need a new one (metal instead of plastic) is the 3.0 V6 supercharged.

It might be that something was missed when the initial repair was made, it might be that there was simply air in the system. Unless every other forum is full of 'my 1.6 TDI leaks' I think you could safely bet it on being an isolated failure.

There have been a few water pumps leaking on a small number of 1.6 and 2.0 TDI's

A mate has just had the leaking water pump replaced under warranty on his 12 plate 1.6 TDi Superb. It lost a load of coolant after a long run then did not lose any more until it had finished another long journey.

Googling the problem brought up loads of failures, there was no quibbling by the dealer even though it was purchased elsewhere, also the cambelt etc was renewed at the same time, all FOC including courtesy car.

So it's been into Audi, no external leaks found so they said it must be leaking internally. They said it might be the EGR cooler.

They said they could check it but it's a big job and if it turns out not to be the EGR then I would have to pay the labour for them checking, which doesn't seem fair at all seeing as it's in warranty. They've asked me to do a test over the next 500 miles to see exactly how much it is losing, and then it will go back in. I will get them to check the EGR and if they want monet for it I will kick up a fuss with Audi.

If the new water pump defo isnt leaking, then there is the posibility that there was air trapped in the system after it was replaced. I've know them take a week or so for it to work its way out, which lowers the coolant level, unusuall for it to be months though.

If in the 500 mile drive the level doesnt go down, then thats probably what it was.

Thanks TT, will monitor it for 500 miles and update

I thought dealer workshops used vacuum coolant fillers to prevent airlocks?

Worryingly when I googled "coolant loss" the EGR leak appeared as well, looks like a horror of a job to change. Apparently you can diagnose it by seeing if the exhaust tail pipe looks shiny clean, as the leaking coolant is vapourised and steam cleans the exhaust system.

Hi Guys,

New member, just having issues with 62 plate A1 S-Line 1.6tdi.

Drove car home from work on Thursday night, no issues.

Got up early hours of Friday morning to go to work, started car and got "check coolant, switch engine off".

When I looked under the car there was a massive puddle. Called roadside assist who came out and reckoned that when the engine was under pressure there was a leak from near engine bulkhead.

He suggested a problem with the EGR valve?!?

It's been with Audi for 3 days and no explanation as yet. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar issue?

I'm lucky in that iv got a courtesy car (a4 s-line).

I'm off on holiday next week so was just wondering, if anyone's had issue, how long does it take to rectify?

Cheers

James

My problem was never sorted, it lost all coolant twice in a couple of days, then after Audi looked at it and topped it up it hasn't leaked again. Very weird.

Just had a call off audi. Oil sump cracked and water pump broken. Any idea how big of a job this is or the time the job will take?

Soooo....after 2 months of problem free motoring, checking the coolant every week to 10 days, the problem has re-occured. Drove to work, no problems, left car in works car park, returned 8 hours later, started engine...coolant light illuminated. Checked bottle, barely any in there. Needless to say audi assist are on their way!

I also have the problem with the coolant loss on my 3.5 year old Octavia 2 facelifted, 1.6 TDI with 48000 km . It has been diagnosed as a broken water pump which needs to be replaced together with the cambelt, all rollers etc. - the water washed all the grease within the capsulated rollers.

I had this problem at the beginning of the year on my SEAT 1.6tdi engine. It took 6 weeks to source another one due to none in stock !!.....all OK thou as I had a nice new courtesy car for the period in all the crappy weather. Eventually turned out that they had to wait for a certain number of failures, which then meant that they could flag up a recall, which is what happened. Known problem....recall....fixed under warranty.
