I'm looking for a new laptop for home use and have found a half decent Toshiba on Amazon, I've only ever had and used Acer/Dell/Fujitsu laptops so wondered what Toshibas are like.

Spec wise I'm after a 17" screen, Core i5 costing no more than £500 and it has to come from Amazon (I have vouchers) before anyone starts suggesting alternatives wink

I had one. Within a few weeks it was repeatedly BSOD-ing. Recovery didn't fix it so it went back. Came back with a dead pixel, so it went back again. A few weeks later the BSOD started again so we rejected it after much huffing and puffing from Comet (no wonder they went tits up). So in short, I can't recommend them.

We've had loads of satellite pros. Bob on & pretty much bomb proof. Her indoors is still using one bought in 2007.

I am now on my 2nd Toshiba laptop, previous one is still working ok but the hinges were showing signs of collapsing so I bought this one, never had a problem with it until recently. Its an L670-14P, 4 years old I think. It randomly freezes and I have to hold down the power button to switch it off and reboot. Can sometimes do it 3 or 4 times a night, then it can go 2 or 3 days without happening.

Suspect it is an overheating issue, I need to get the back off it and give it a good clean out, it is used on our laps so probably has got loads of clothing fluff clogging up the inside.

+1 this. We are on our 2nd, first one lasted 7 years, only upgraded because we needed a faster machine. Never any trouble apart from batteries as we were using on a daily basis.

We've got two Tosh's in the office. Cr*p. All sorts of driver trouble and problems. The Lenovos have behaved flawlessly. The Samsung's so so. We're now onto some cracking Dells 128GB SSD, 8GB RAM i7 Ally body - very nice. Reliability as yet unproven.

Just make sure you get a hybrid SSD/HDD or SSD. The performance difference is remarkable.

I bought a Toshiba Satellite C70 a couple of months ago as I was looking for a 17" screen and it was reasonably cheap at the time in PC World. Not had any problems with it so far, other than getting used to Windows 8. The one I bought only came with 4Gb of RAM so I got another 8Gb off ebay and stuck it in and it now flies compared to my old laptop. I think it was £389 and with £30 on RAM it seemed reasonable value for a large screen laptop. Not had any driver issues. The plastic does look a little cheap compared to some other laptops but you get what you pay for I guess. Overall, recommended.

They have a habit of eating their power connectors after 18m.

I have had three Tosh Tecras and all were great, used happily for about three years. These were my work machines so used all day long and hauled around the world. The only issue for me was that the batteries gave up after about 2 years.

We are still using my las one at home, an i7.

Only replaced with a Mac as Tosh didn't appear to do a power user's machine at the time, but am glad I went Mac as it's miles better than windows, is pretty compatible and starts/stops almost instantly.

I have used satellite pro's
I find them a bit dull cosmetically but they work well enough
Mate has had one for a few years with no issues

I just think they are not a "sexy" brand

Ive had a Toshiba laptop for years, the only thing that stopped it working for me was it was stolen!

Probably still going strong somewhere. Replaced it with another one and its been going on strong since. Its now a few years old. Battery life is still good and as long as the software is maintained it still runs fine.

Unless something drastic happens it will be getting replaced with another toshiba eventually.

Thanks for all the input, it looks like there are more positive then negative experiences so I may well end up getting one.

I did a bit of research on the lenovo lap tops, as on the face of it they sound very good at a reasonable price, and effectively being the old IBM Thinkpads. Sadly most of what I could fine showed them to be a pile ste and therefore I wouldn't have touched with a pole.

Certainly not with work money and definitely not with mine. There are way better out there.

As per my 1st post, it needs to have a 17“ screen, be ~£500 and available from Amazon...
