Hi Guys I might be asking a real novice question here but I want to find what is suited better for me in terms of economy

Im wanting get the new shape Vauxhall Astra SRI. Most of my driving is back to and fro from work. Its all urban town mileage..

what would be more economically better suited for me .. a 1.4 Petrol or 1.7 CDti ecoflex. Been speaking to my brother and he keeps saying that a petrol car is better for me as most of my mileage is urban where as the engine is more efficient on the motorway so your going to get more mileage out of it and make the most out of a diesel car.

Looking at sites such as auto trader they report 39 mpg for a 1.4 petrol and 65 for 1.7 cdti.To me the CDti seems the clear choice but some pointers would be good.

Also for this car what would you consider the maximum acceptable mileage when purchasing???.

Depends on your total annual mileage? The generally accepted threshold where diesel makes financial sense over petrol is 15k miles a year.

From what you've given us, I'd say your brother is right. Your usage would not get the best out of a diesel. Also, don't forget the diesel is probably more expensive to buy.
