The wife has taken to saving all the 2 coins we get in change

What percentage of our change will that work out as?

I don't think it can be calculated

No Idea but I have often wondered if you could separate the two different metals of the coin by heating the outer ring.

I've had numerous £2 coins where the middle piece spins inside the outer.

I can confirm that you can heat them, punch out the middle, and then reassemble with the insert the wrong way around. I had a summer job in the late 90's where this was the mechanics lunchtime"hobby".

Can't tell you how much you'll save but have friends who do thus annually and it pays for a family holiday !

I do this too, and every few months I get something for myself with it. So far it's paid for an Ouya console and half paid for an iPad.

They also fit beautifully in old 35mm film containers! One full container = 34 IIRC.

Fukkit, pound sign still not working. 34GBP.

We save them as well - we call it the "savings tax" hehe

Typically see 600 a year from it. Nothing more annoying than paying for something with a 20 note and getting a load of 2 coins back hehe

Have you noticed that frieze of interlocking cogwheels around the 'bull' of the silver bit?
Symbolic of advanced engineering or 'working together'?
Well it won't.
There are an odd number of cogs, so the whole assembly would lock up as soon as one turned.
Sad, really.

They were commemorative coins, never really intended for general issue. There are also 25p, £5 and £20 coins.

For those talking about separating £2 coins, it isn't that complicated.

I worked in a metalwork shop around the time they were introduced, and heard that they could be separated easily with a hammer. I think this was about 1998.

I told this to a mate when he said "I've got a 2 pound coin!" We put it in a vice, hit the middle bit with the ball of a hammer and it popped out. He looked a bit concerned, but it just bashed straight back in as good as new on the bench.

I wouldn't waste my time with torches or freezers. It's a press fit, not bonded in any way.

Disclaimer - the design may have changed since then, I don't need to be flooded with invoices for £2...

Having just moved, I found an old collection-stash of £5.00 coins.

Delighted to learn, they're worth, £5.00 each.............
