I love the sound!

OK to many it will sound like a monotonous grunting sound but if you listen closely there is some amazing turbo spool, wastegate chatter and antilag

What's wrong with that lot?

As a non F1 watcher, i dont see the issue.
If youre going to watch a boring sport it may as well be accompanied by a boring soundtrack.

Because one of my highlights of watching F1 was hearing the car come out of Maggots, approaching , getting louder, booming past you on Hanger Straight before hearing them change down for Stowe and hearing them go off to Vale. Something about hearing the car approaching and hearing it disappear is amazing. I shall see how it goes this year as I have tickets for Silverstone.

Because they are comparing them to the V10s and V12s of years gone by.

I actually quite like the new sounds but I can understand why others may not.

You see, it's that bad that I've even had to invent a word to encompass it.

The new turbo engines do sound remarkably flat and dull.

The peak of F1 engine beauty came around the time of the howling Hondas in the 1980s and 1990s. Been downhill ever since. The 2014 F1 cars sound like a Golf GTI race nono

Because European racing engines have always been epitomized by a high pitched sound, and F1 engines are often seen as the peak of this.

Now they sound flat, and rather dull. They don't really sound nice and basey like an amg v8, just sound weak to me.

My favourite part in that vid is seeing all the fans in the first vid wearing ear-protection and then not in the second vid. Must have LOVED that old sound so much they had to shut it out to avoid getting too excited or something...

In all honesty I think something in between would be good. The old noise was to my ears bloody awful. It didn't sound like power, it didn't even sound like an engine. It was just white noise that made your eyes water and actually put me off of attending any more races.

Would the BRM V16 be such a legend if it wasn't for it's terrifically noisy engine?
I once read that the other drivers hated it because the it was that noisey it made them feel sick.

Racing cars just don't seem right unless they are bloody noisy.

I was once about 2 feet away from a Jordan F1 when they started it up.
The ground was shaking under my feet and the sound waves were punching against my chest. It was sensational.

I didn't even like the 2.4L V8s very much, and preferred the 3.5L V12s and 3.0 V10s. I started watching F1 in 1987 - towards the end of the 1.5L turbo era. For me at least, the spectacle really improved in 1989 - the first full year of the 3.5L engine formula.

I've not heard one of this years cars "in the flesh", but I've watched the TV coverage and plenty of videos on YouTube with the sound cranked up - to me, there's nothing about the noise that makes your spine tingle. Compare that to the sound of a V12 Ferrari F1 car from the early 90s ... it really is a magical noise.

Edited to add: something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SoZiTxdQyw

Fully aware its all about progress of course. The engine manufacturers are pouring millions in to the sport, and if they're all working towards hybrid power units in road cars, they'll want the same technology in F1 as a showcase (especially as F1 has often in the past acted as a catalyst for the development of technology in road cars)

F1 in the 1990s and 2000s was at the peak of my interest in the sport, which is why I'm disappointed that its all had to change. Good job Bernie is reportedly in the process of setting up a series for year 2000 era F1 cars smile

I think 2014 V6 engines are interesting, especially the on board stuff, but I don't love the sound.

The 3.0L V10 was my favourite.

I remember going to Silverstone (2008) and being hugely underwhelmed by the sound in comparison with the R25 V10 from 2005.
