Looking at getting a set of casual boots for riding locally (I have a set of Sidi's for more spirited or long distance) wondering which ones people would recommend.

Having looked on line RST (Urban) and TCX (x-street)seem to be the main brands for the sort of look I am after.

The price difference through is £60 against £120 though the TCX are CE approved they both have armour and similar non slip soles.

Anyone with experience of either including how the sizing compares with normal shoes or suggestions of other models/manufacturers?

Cheers

I bought the TCX in black leather last year for a trip to Spain.

Very comfortable, and look good off the bike as well.

How much protection they actually offer in a crash is debatable but I suppose you'd rather have these on than a pair of regular Converse.

I ride my 5 mile commute in a pair of Alpinestars Joey boots that are very similar to the ones posted, they are comfy enough and saves me having to change boots when i get to work, they look like normal trainers but have some extra padding, obviously they won't have the protection of my Sidis but I tend not to ride all that fast in them.

I'm seriously thinking about a pair of these for going to work during summer.
How is the sizing?

Mine are a 46, I usually wear a 12 (45/46) and they fit fine. My only problem is that when I drive a car in them I always get a static shock when closing the door that I don't get in any other shoes! headache

Moanthebairns has pointed out that J&S have black Alpinestar Joeys at £80 instead of £112.

I just got some smx2's and feel they offer good protection but still look a bit too much like bike boots for work. Originally preferred the look of the ones you mentioned but then decided on the more protective ones.
Got size 42 fit me like a size 8.

I had a look at these urban boots (was going to buy A* Joey) and the only difference I could spot from normal ones was that they were a bit bigger and had a little support near the ankle. In short, I thought they were bike books in name but not as protective as proper bike boots.

Ended up spending 1/3 of the cost of a pair of high top trainers with a stiffish toe cap/upper part of the shoe that's in contact with the gear lever.

Traditional engineer boots FTW. No armour but gurls like them. Biker chic, Marlon Brando, James Dean etc. Frye are the best. http://www.shopbop.com/engineer-12r-frye/vp/v=1/15...

Very comfy, wear them all day, they can be resoled and heeled by any cobbler, thick top quality leather, oil resistant sole, will last for decades with a little TLC now and then. List price is £160+ but if you're patient you'll find cheap ones on ebay. I've got 2 pairs, they were about £60 or £70 I think.

I was having a look at these recently and a journo said that he was using some TCX Boots X-Rap WP - waterproof and normal high top looking. Does anyone use these?

Acquired a pair of these

http://www.getgeared.co.uk/probiker_motorcycle_boo...

the day before yesterday, combined with a Bering vented jacket, my daily commute into London is much cooler and therefore more relaxed....

Note: if it looks like rain I'll use my TCX Infinity's

but while the sun shines.........

I have some TCXes, can't remember the model, although they look like the Jupiter 2 I just found a picture of. Really comfy, rainproof (properly tested in two torrential downpours last year) and showing few signs of wear after a full year's use.

Thanks guys. It would just be useful to be able to get off the bike and not be clumping around in huge great boots sometimes.

I've got a pair of these. They're great - super comfortable, look just like hi top trainers so they're ideal for wearing with jeans for popping into the city etc - better than clomping round in full on boots.

Size wise, mine are 8.5/42 - I normally wear size 8 shoes so am up half a size, but that's the same for my Alpinestar SMX boots. They are a little slim fitting though - I don't have fat feet as such so find them fine, but they might be a little bit of a squeeze for the more fatter-footed fellow.

I'd recommend them - though I'd definitely be wearing my proper boots for anything other than city riding. It's clear the TCX boots have protection in, but not a substitute for a full on bike boot.

Hope that's of some help!

If you want something to wear about town with a pair of Kevlar Jeans I'd not hesitate to recommend the Revit Mohawk boots.

Very comfortable, good protection around the ankle and they look like a nice pair of normal boots. smile
