One of them has appeared in classifields recently not so far from me. They look... weird, but have a certain charm. How about other things however? Are they any good? How about reliabilty? I heard that, like 440 and 460 they are based on old DAF underpinnings and therefore not really up to Volvo quality? As far as I know they weren't made in Sweden, but in NL. Does anyone has got any experience with them?

Rust is a problem as are water leaks. Electrics on them can be a real head scratcher. 2.0 engine easily the best of the bunch. Most 1.7 and 1.7 turbos require a head gasket at some point. Very rare now and look great, nice inside too but they were never really thought of as a "proper swedish volvo" so don't expect 740/850 levels of invincibility. The 400 series was undoubtedly the worst car Volvo has ever made before or since, I'd still quite like a 480 though - a future classic for sure but I would not pay more a grand for one - and even then at £1000 it would have to be a serious minter. Better off with a C70 - A proper Volvo coupe

I like the looks of C70, however isn't it a bit too porky? I have also heard that almost all of it's engines are both underpowered and thirsty...

I've got a C70 T5 GT and if 240bhp, 0-60 in under 7 seconds and a genuine 150mph+ top speed is too slow then you certainly don't want a 480 turbo, which incidentally has only around 125bhp to play with. Weight wise a C70 is the same as a volvo 850R on which it is based
