Hello Rupert,

We are in SW France. Close to Albi. 70kms from Toulouse.

Renting long term is not easy. The laws here are very much on the side on the tenant, and so landlords are very wary. It is a guillotine offence to evict a tenant during the winter months, and pretty tough to do when the sun is shining too.

You would need at minimum, a french bank account, proof of earnings (even if you have ample funds to pay rent for several years), good references and possibly a good notaire too.

My advice would be to look for a winter let of a summer rental property, which you could get from early October, maybe before. Many owners of summer rental properties will charge the same for a month in winter as they would for a week in summer. You could possibly get an eight month let on this basis. This would give you time to assess if France or even the region you are in is where you want to be longer term.

Hi Rupert

Did you find anything suitable ?

We are looking to do the same but our house sale means that we may have to do our looking during August !!!

Considering buying a motorhome while we look, then return it to the UK for sale afterwards.

We are erring towards Charente or North Lot region but cannot decide so need to do further exploration.

Thanks Marcellus but just a Little too far out for us. Any suggestions for the Charente area would be gratefully received.

Cheers

We have a 2 bedroomed cottage available in the southern part of the Haute-Vienne (87) (5mins from the border of the Dordogne department) but probably not far enough south for you and probably too far east of the Charente.

Any particular reason why you're dead set on that area?

Hi Perik, thanks for the offer but we have now been sorted.

Smifffy, we decided this area for a number of reasons including access to ferry ports at Caen and St. Malo for family to be able to get to us in a reasonable time, the countryside, the cost of properties etc etc.

Any way, we have found our home, made the offer and now start the legal process. Then I set about getting my cobra replica over and registered :0

Welcome! We're in the Charentes pretty regularly, lovely driving roads. Not to rain on your parade, but replicas are all but impossible to re-register. If it doesn't have EU type-approval (i.e. a CoC) then you have to go through DRIRE/DREAL/UTAC which is a battery of tests that include visibility angles, pollution, the works. Have a look at EU-spec westfields and caterhams to see what I mean. Daft mirrors on stalks coming off the doors...

I was told this and even put the car up for sale, but then I spoke with a guy over there who is helping a number of Cobra Rep's through the registration process very successfully. So I thought I'd give it a go and see what happens !!
