Hi All,

I was just wondering if anyone can advise on some good places to live (rented accommodation) in or around Bangor? I am from England so dont have much experience of this area.

Ideally, I am looking for a house/flat (not shared) which has a garage so that I can store my motorbike and work on it in the dry when needs be.

Any advice/tips greatly appreciated.

Hello there and welcome,

There's a few places in and around the Bangor to consider. If you look at the map you'll see that Bangor is on the edge of Snowdonia, across the bridge to Anglesey and just off the A55, so in easy reach of Llandudno, Conwy, Colwyn Bay etc.

So the real question comes down to what you want and can afford.

Is it just you, or are you bringing a family? Do you want to walk to work or happy to commute? Do you like city centre living, in and around civilisation or out in the sticks? These options are all available.

Menai Bridge is lovely and lierally over the bridge, you could head into the Mountains and the villages around Bethesda or go for something in the centre of the city. Further afield Conwy is stunning, Llandudno has everything you could ever want and Colwyn Bay is also worth a look.

Perhaps if you get chance to visit the area you would be able to get a better feel for what you want and what is on offer.

Best of luck, any more questions feel free to contact or post.

Regards, Neil

Hi Neil,

Thanks very much for an informative post - it is much appreciated!

I will be moving up alone so ideally looking for a one bedroom house or studio flat/apartment. I was hoping to get a dwelling that has a garage as I want somewhere to store my motorbike and tools. My budget is around £400-£700 per month.

I will start my new job at Bangor University in August, and have no problems living 10-15 miles away, as I am happy to drive or cycle to work.

I know there are some letting agents in Bangor (Beresford Adams, Daffyd Hardy), but searches on their website have not revealed anything significant as of yet.

I plan on coming to Bangor on 2nd of July and spend 2-3 days looking around. Staff at the Uni have kindly told me that they will drive me round the pockets where staff generally live to give me a better idea.

I do love the sticks, and wouldnt mind living away from city centre life. But I am flexible and want to choose a 'homely' dwelling with a bonus of a garage.

One question that I do have is if I can only find a property without a gargage, can I rent garage space somewhere near by?

Thanks once again for your help Niel.

I suspect therein lies the problem.

The nature of alot of the local properties is that they don't have garages, especially smaller ones. You may need to rent a larger house to get a garage.

This will impact price, location and may need you to compromise on other aspects. There are somer smaller houses with garages in Menai Bridge. While they aren't the most interesting properties in the area, the village is lovely with plenty of good pubs, scenery and easy access to Bangor.

Have a look when you come up.

Which department are going to be working in?

Yes this was the feeling I was getting too. Most of the larger properties do have garages but they are out of my budget. I have just spotted this one on Menai Bridge for quite a reasonable price with a garage:

I will be working as a lecturer in the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, and am very much looking forward to starting and enjoying the roads out there!

Yes, I know where that one is, not the most ispiring propoerty, or the most enticing furnishings! but it's a nice little estate and only a couple of mins walk into the village.

I would suggest that something like that is going to be the best compromise. Menai Bridge is a really nice place to live, I lived there for 6 years and loved it. Anglesey is a wonderful place to live, especially when the weather is like it is today. There's some great roads around and about, well worth a blast out into the mountains.

Take a drive around when you come up. If you draw up a shortlist, I'm happy to give some impartial advice on areas.

Hi Neil,

That's very kind of you and I genuinely do appreciate it. OK, I will make a list of properties that I find suitable and then let you know about the areas in due course.

If you still live nearby, then I when I actually move up, it would be my pleasure to buy you lunch/coffee as a thank you gesture.

Hi Neil,

I have been continuing my search for properties to rent, but the estate agent I want to view the properties with have not been able to arrange viewings with me despite a few phone call to them(apparently they cant get hold of the tennants to get permission for viewing).

I actually want to still see the property I posted earlier in this thread in Menai Bridge and the following one too:
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/proper...

Is Llanfairpwll a good area?

My shortlist of areas at the moment include:
Menai bridge
Llanfairpwll
Bethesda
Caernarfon
Betswy Coed
Penmanmawr

Hello again,

As mentioned previously Menai Bridge is lovely, you'll be able to walk to the town and around the straights after a hard day at the office.

Llanfairpwll is fine, the house in the link looks very nice inside, not sure exactly where that one is.

Bethesda is just down the road from Bangor towards Snowdonia. There's lots of university folk out that way.

Caernarfon is not far, like Bethesda it feels more Welsh, has some lovely pubs and scenery. Really depends whereabouts you are in the town, I always found the town centre disappointing, but no more so than other town centres around the country and the same applies to Bangor to a lesser degree.

Betws y Coed is chocholate box beautiful, abit farther out, but an interesting drive to work. Can get a bit congested during the summer months.

Penmanmawr is an old victorian town, abit run down these days (the A55 killed these towns along the coast) but has character.

For my money, Menai Bridge would the number 1 choice for convenience, facilities, relaxed lifestyle, scenery. Some of the places on the list are better in some aspects, but I think Menai wins overall. Obviously finding the right propoerty will be a major factor, so have a look around the areas and see what you like. I wouldn't rule out properties in other parts of Anglesey. The island is easily traversed and there are some cracking spots across the island. Personally, I love Anglesey or Ynys Mon as it is known round these parts. Wherever you go you'll struggle to ever be more than 10 mins from the seaside and some stunning scenery.

Happy hunting. Regards, Neil

Thanks very much for that Neil. Very informative.
I have a viewing for the property in Menai Bridge later this week, so hopefully some progress can be made!

Thats very kind of you Chris.

I actually found a lovely place in Llanfairpwwl. It has a big garage and is lovely from the inside. The landlord has kept the property well-maintained.

One thing that I would like to know - are their any hidden gems in terms of driving roads in Anglesey? I dont really like the A5025 as their are too many villages (and speed limit changes). I am after a continuous road which is mainly national speed limit and is fast and flowing.

Also, any local petrol heads want to meet and go for a drive on some of the good roads? I drive a car and ride a motorbike so am happy to do either.
