Gents
Apologies if this is not the appropriate forum, but it seemed the obvious choice to me. I am after some opinions on Pick ups. I am after something that will tow a car on a trailer with ease, can carry a healthy payload of tools, spares etc into the bargain, has a crew cab and is as comfortable as possible for some long distance work. I do a spot of rallying, so need something to take car and gear plus people with ease and comfort without getting into the realms of huge American beasts. I am a newcomer to pickups, but the Toyota Hilux 3.0 invisible looks a possible contender, but open to suggestions if you know otherwise. What do you think?

Is there any particular reason why a pickup instead of a normal 4x4 (Disco, Shogun, Landcruiser etc)? Would seem to fit your criteria.

Mainly cost (pick ups seem less expensive) and load carrying capacity ( pick ups can haul more)

Depending on the exact circumstances you can often get more in an 'estate' than a pick up.

Especially long items if you put the back seats down which you can't do in a twin cab pick up.
You also have less security with a pickup.

Happy enough with my Navara so far.

Lockable canopy seems secure enough and standard roof bars have already carried plenty of timber that I can't fit in the back, (although I still struggle with Krypton factor ratchet straps because I'm stupid).

I've not towed with it and there are probably good alternatives (4 wheel drive vans etc) but pleased with it.

If you're going to use it unladen then a conventional 4x4 will ride much better for the 80% you're not towing.

I gave a 2012 L200 Barbarian, can get loads in the back ans although no where near as nice to drive as the Mrs Grand Cherokee, it is ok to drive.

I enjoy the utilitarian feel to it and with the remap its 225bhp and loads of torques.

Tows with easy and secure with the pod on. plus the front pod window and rear window on the L200 lowers extra long things can be slid into the cab.

Will be changing to an Amok next year.

I got the Isuzu D-Max last year specifically for it's towing capacity, can't fault it except for the lack of a ladder rack, basic error on the part of Isuzu but not a show stopper. Have used it to tow a compact tractor with front loader and rear hoe on a large 4 wheel trailer to southern France and it was a piece of cake. Just have to watch your speed on the downhill bits.

I run a 2014 barbarian. Love everything about it, only real criticism would be the lack of a 6 speed manual.
Personally I like a pick up to look like one and use a tonneau cover. Also the kit I carry often needs the height so a top would be impractical.

A couple of vw's round here, some with nice bolt ons too, I like them but on bed length alone Ill replace like for like next....just in blue. I couldn't wait the extra 2 weeks for blue and had black....I've always been impatient.

I was going to say; big SUVs can carry a lot of kit anyway but it looks like you've figured that out for yourself. Enjoy! smile

I've been looking recently at the mitsubishi L200... You can lease these at the mo for £140 + vat a month... Good deal in my eyes...

Look at the details. They do look like good value and you can claim the vat back if you're a business as it carries over a ton. However that £140 will be for a low mileage. Mine is well over double that for a barbarian with some extras for 15k miles a year. I also have a service plan included at £56 a month. All I have to do is fuel it and insure it. 1st service was £239.99 and they're 9k service intervals, it covers tyres too, could cost £600 for a full set of boots.

If you're not familiar with them either have a good length test. I drove the warrior as a barbarian wasn't available for a test drive. They drive the same but you obviously don't get the toys inside.
