I lived in Moortown and worked in Morley for a time back in the early 90's. A61, A58(M) M621 to Morley then onto the A650 to work past the ASDA. Or Down Elland Road across the ring road and up the A643. Or continue on past the White Rose and then up the B6123. Plenty of ways to get there some better than others.

Sorry to hijack the thread but am in a similar situation. I have just accepted a job in the vicinity of Leeds-Bradford airport and am looking for a place to live. I am 28 without children so I assume Leeds city center would be the best bet? Any areas you would recommend?, I'm looking to spend around 500 per month.

I live next to Leeds/Bradford airport in Yeadon and love it. Countryside 2 minutes one way, Leeds/Harrogate 20 minutes the other.
As well as Yeadon, there is Otley, Guiseley, Rawdon, Horsforth. All nice areas.

I live at Rawdon and love it there, but it's not a 'lively' place. Depends what you want.

The post above has some nice places, and I'd search what you can get for your £500 and then go from there.

At 28 I would definitely go city centre, there is just so much more going on! The only thing is you may have to up your budget, particularly for it to include parking.

I live in Churwell... it's one stop on the train away from Morley. Though if you arr working off the dual carriage way near morley (White Rose, o2 etc) then that's not much use.

I would say Churwell and Morley are not "up and coming", though as someone pointed out, every now adn then when i'm out for a run i see some mill conversions etc tucked away...

I like the fact that I'm 5 mins walk from the train station, and once on the train the city centre is 7 mins away - £2.80 return. So you can get to all the bars, restaurants etc you like really cheap/easily.

It sounds like a Flat around brewery wharf / Clarence dock would be ideal for you for up & coming, and easy enough to get to Morley even driving. (but probably not available for £100k)

I would say Kirkstall, Headingley, Chapel Allerton (though the commute from here probably a bh), Horsforth are probably the kind of places you'd be looking at, though again £100k won't get you much.

I can go up to around £160k-£170k, but I just hate all the generic flats in the centre of town which all just look the same inside. I do keep an eye out for stuff though.

Yeh Chap allerton is too far I think, the commute wouldn't save me that much time over my current commute from sheffield.

Seen this house recently and it's properly taken my fancy. Already allocated the games room as a games room + gym + Movie room with projector. Haven't a foggiest about the area though as seems quite far out?!

Rothwell is OK, the police helicopter seems to spend a fair bit of time there if the twitter feed is to be believed but it's certainly had some cash thrown at the town centre around the Morrisons development. I don't think it's a "night out" kind of place and some of the people look a little bit "Hills have Eyes" but no more so than Morley I suppose. Just another town that prospered on mining and died out with it that's now trying to claw its way back.

Good transport links but not as easy to get into Leeds as Morley - I did the commute in the other direction for years and you have a choice of routes involving the M1, M62, M621 and various back roads depending on what works best for you.

Some nice areas, some less so, like anywhere I suppose.

Rothwell is ok, but no rail link so its a £10 cab to town if you want to go on the lash. There aren't too many pubs out that way and those there are either Hungry Horse jobs or dingy boozers.

At 28 it all seems a bit old man, but each to their own. If it were me, and you didn't want to buy a generic central flat, I'd buy your £100k house in suburbia and rent a central pad for a few years to enjoy the city. Just don't end up being in the middle of it all on the lash 6 nights a week 5 years later...like some people...

I lived in Rothwell for 10years and now live in Methley. Like all Leeds suburbs it has it's own caancil estate tacked on (or are we tacked on to them?). You get the odd undesirable but compared to somewhere like belle isle, gipton et al, this place is like disney land!!

Woodlesford station is a short bus ride/jog/bike away so train into town is a doddle. We sometimes dump the car at the station, night out, taxi home then I'll jog down for it next day. Saves a few quid.

At 28, single and with the world being your oyster I would be aiming for somewhere a bit more err "hip"...Chapel A may be worth the commute as you have a good night out there on your doorstep, no shortage of willing victims wink, you can't say the same about LS26. Police choppers???? No idea here, I do know that whenever they transport high value cons from HMP Wakey that this can sometimes result in the chopper coming out and alll the rest. Crime in Methley isn't even on the radar, my good mate is a West Yorks Inspector and that's what he tells me.

Can you ride a motorbike? It would make commuting less of a problem.

I'm 24, the guy that hijacked my thread is 28 lol. But still, the situation is the same.

I would love a place in the city centre. But a decent flat is £170k, which I can afford the mortgage on at a push, but then the £2k service charges etc will just wind me up!

Chap A is just too far. I've been driving to Bramley/Armley etc to see houses after work and it takes me half an hour just to get there on a normal day of traffic, so any further north just makes the move to Leeds un-viable!

Think I'ma stick to Bramley area, it looks OK enough and the terrace houses there are surprisingly big!

Saying that I am going to see a flat in headingly on monday, so if the commute isn't too bad after work then that could be an option!

If you're looking at Bramley it may be worth looking at top of Stanningley Road for stuff that may be classed as Farsley. Basically the area between Go Outdoors and Green Flag, there are some good terraces behind there.

Handy for ring road and New Pudsey station.

Also may be worth looking at Pudsey too. There's a great cut through along the back roads from Pudsey to Morley via Drighlington that gets you there in no time.

I've decided on houses just off kirkstall road, near to the cinema. They aren't as good value for money as the ones in bramley (which were deceptively big for terraces), but will hopefully give me a better feeling of city living as lots of local ameneties plus the city centre is a 5 minute taxi ride away.

Kirstall Road at rush hour....*shudders*

But on the plus side you would be right next to the mechanic I use.

Any views on the bottom of roundhay guys? Below the park.

Google maps says 20 minutes to work, so i'm guessing 30-40 on a normal day? Work is the tingley/morley m62 junction.

If it's about 30-40 commute I could live with that, better than the hour and 70 mile return trip I do now.

I guess its about 7-10 miles from Morley.

I've only driven that route at night, but I imagine at rush hour it will be busy by harehills and the junction by the BMW garage, then may be clear along the tunnels on the a58m (I have never done that bit, it is busy there at night) but from the wortley roundabout along the A643 out towards elland road will be stop start. Then it should be clear from mcD's off the a643/m621 junction, past the new police station, out to the m62 junction.

I drive the last bit - drysalters/cottingley out to the m62 every morning and its a clear run out.

Hopefully I threw enough landnarks I there you can figure what I'm on about on google maps...

Brilliant info cheers.

That's what i'm thinking, the first bit may be a bit stop start, but once i'm past the city centre i'll be going the opposite way to everybody, same for my return journey too really.

My commute currently takes 43 mins according to google maps, when it's realistically about 1 hour 10. So using those figures on a 20 minute google maps estimate I'd say 40 mins from roundhay to work, which is decent enough really.

The area is meant to be pretty nice with bars & restaurants which is what i'm after really.

Have a search on Facebook for Roundhay ParkFit

You can come and join in some running around if you're up for it!

I don't live round that way but me and a couple of pals set it up and we get a good group of 10-15 people running round the park a couple of times a week. The main man lives just next to the park. Nice place to have on your doorstep and probably worth the drag over to Morley to live round there. It's not a long distance as such but it's not going to be a flowing commute by any stretch.

OP, I live in Morley (half a mile down the road from The Village hotel) and can only echo what others have said; it's not that bad but there are nicer parts of Leeds. We usually find ourselves either getting a taxi into the city centre or driving over to Horsforth, Roundhay and Guiseley (where the in-laws are)for entertainment. Definitely agree with the earlier comments on pubs & restaurants.

If you can cope with the travel then I'd live in Roundhay every time. Probably a 15 - 20% price different though. The top end of your budget will get you a decent 3 bed semi with a garage on a reasonable plot in the Morley area.

Roundhay - Morley commute you're probably looking at about 35 - 45 mins in rush hour. I did it the other way for a couple of years. At least once you get past the city centre you will be driving more or less against the heavy traffic rather than in it. Let us know when you've moved and there are a couple of rat runs I can guide you round to avoid the main congested roads.

Give me a shout if you want to know anything else.
