I've put the Fiat 1100 Sport Coupe over, and matched the rear as best I can.

I think we are close to cracking the case and getting a conviction.

There's also the Fiat 1100 Zagato which is another of the 'almost but not quite' cars!

This thread is delightfully frustrating.

The wheelbase/floorplan (?) of the 1100 is wrong. Too much space between the front wheel and the cabin - I'm sure it can be tweaked but all variants are similar.

The Fiat 850 is closer:

That one's an Abarth Allemano coupé, FWIW, although it's obviously not exactly right.

The other reason I suggest the 850 as a base is it's rear-engined. The most unusual thing to me about the mystery car is it's low, descending bonnet. I don't think there can be a lot of room in there, given its peers of the time. I could be way off.

First the location:
Hôtel de France and its restaurant "Le Relais de Ronsard 'in located forty kilometers southeast of Le Mans La Chartre-sur-le-Loir.
Second:
I haven't got a clue regarding the car biggrin

I agree! If the wheelbase is wrong, it's unlikely to be the 1100.

The Fiat was already mentioned on page 1. The overall shape is fairly close but draw a line downwards from the bottom of the A pillar and look where it intersects; on the Fiat it's very close to the front of the sill, but on the mystery car it's a good 12-18 inches further back on the Fiat, more than a third of the way down the sill.

I'm genuinely surprised that people seem to miss such significant differences.

Mike, I speak for myself here, I'm not missing the significant differences but then I haven't made that clear as I post possibilities, because it's so obvious, it's just speculation and thought provoking, suggesting one marque to make someone forward another etc.
We should have looked on page 1 to see that the Fiat had already been suggested.

Just frustrating but fun. wink

I look at this thread daily to see if anyone has cracked it yet and despite all the knowledgeable people on here this car is still unidentified. I'm thinking it may now be a one off coach built car.

I may have already posted this, but it's on Autopuzzles, and only one suggestion has been proposed. There are no definite leads.

If the members of that forum can't solve it, nobody can. I also reckon it's a one-off, probably homebuilt or made by a small panelbeating outfit - the overall shape is not particularly pleasing, and the workmanship is nowhere near the level of a decent coachbuilder.

It also looks like a Wartburg of some kind, but I can't find one that matches exactly.

Can we all agree that there are lots that look "about right" for the rear half, but the troublesome areas are the proximity of the A pillar to the front wheel arch, and the steep slope on the bonnet ?

The slope on the bonnet makes me think rear engined but I still can't think of anything that matches it

Clutching at straws time... I've just seen this on an image site, it's a Jowett Jupiter bodied by Coachcraft of Egham.

My first reaction was to say that that's miles off, but looking closer it's actually not too bad a shout. Square off the rear arches and channel the roof, and it's in the ballpark. Still not right though ranting

I'll agree with that. With the front end perhaps inspired by the above '57 Pininfarina concept.

If it is a one-off, this photo may well be the only surviving evidence of it.

I think the only thing that stands out to me is the line of the top of the door window. The top of the window is noticeably curved, as the roof line drops away quite suddenly.

If you can find a car with a curved top to the side windows, then we might be closer to identifying it?
