At fifty quid a ticket, I reckon Lord March is quite happy to have as many of the great unwashed as he can get!
That's probably quite true, although at the members meeting (which did do additional invites to non members) there was none of this.

I'm surprised it hasn't been targeted by the crusties yet, it's a festival of everything they hate.

It was a shame that during the very well advertised 11am "One minute of Noise" for Jack Brabham on Sunday only myself and maybe a dozen others applauded out of the hundreds around. I was near the start line grandstands and looked at the grandstands during the minute and some people had even carried on texting instead of joining in.

As a motorsport fan being at Goodwood for the first time felt a bit odd to be honest. It seemed like 3/4's of the crowd was a mix of either very "corporate" or very "fashionable" people neither of which had any interest in the main reason to be there - the cars. I suppose it's like a bit Glastonbury now, a tick on someone's bucket list. What started as a good idea looks like it's become "mainstream" and lost it's soul a little in the process.

That sucks.

I had a scratch running the full length of the passenger side of my car where someone has dragged something down the side at the FOS. Managed to polish it out so nowhere near as bad as the OP but such carelessness amongst petrol heads is disappointing.
I think a pretty large contingent aren't petrol heads. Some are there to show off with their hospitality passes, others are there for a day of get pissed in the sun and there were even a few stag parties! I don't think Goodwood is the place for a stag do.

I got the feeling some were treating it a bit like Ascot. Not there for the horses, more the dressing up, pretending to be posh, getting drunk and carrying on.

Plenty of other halfs and kids traipsing around with the "I am definitely happy to be here" face on as well while they follow dad around on the one day he gets to do indulge.

I had more than one internal chortle at complaining wives in inappropriate footwear climbing the hill. I've long been of the view that art galleries / museums and motorsport events are no place for the under 7s, but then I'm often considered more grumpy than Victor Meldrew! The Junior autograph zone at the Drivers club red carpet was also amusing. Chris Goodwin had been signing for some of the 'trade' signature collectors and turned to walk away when a small oik yelled at him 'Oi mister, what's your name?' With a big grin Goodwin replied, 'Chris, what's your's?' and carried on his way

The number of individuals wandering around without a top on has gone up annually.

I think it could be time to strictly enforce a dress code to wheedle some of it out. No trainers or sports wear. Men in shirts etc. Have people on the gate enforcing it.

Far too hot for men in shirts!

I had shorts and plain polo-shirt on (not uber smart, but not a scruffy bugger!) and I was wilting in that heat. I don't go shirtless, not that type of person (spend enough time wearing nowt but speedos at the pool anyway!) but wearing something stuffy like a suit would have killed me off.

Even if I was naked I'd have been uncomfortably hot, but my pale northern skin that burns at slightest hint of sun, see's to it that I don't do naked ! Don't know what it is about my body. Its always hot, often cant sleep some nights because I am radiating so much heat! makes the OH happy though as she is perennially ice cold!

Boots etc doesn't bother me, but a formal dress code would stop a lot of this.. it'd be too much effort for the great unwashed to comply with.
Since suffering from a heart virus a few years back I get incredibly hot and sweaty, incredibly quickly, all the time if walking out and about etc.

I'm ashamed to say I've discovered football-type shirts are by far the best thing for me (the newer England shirts are amazing, actually), so for the past two years I've been walking around in longish swimming shorts, an England football shirt and the thinnest plimsoll things I can find. Do I think it looks 'good' or even vaguely formal? Of course not, but it gets me through the day.

As much as I would love the Revival, it's just never going to be practical for me, so I for one hope the FoS never introduces a dress code, as it would more than likely kill off my most anticipated event of the year.

You could do the revival - just get one of those whole body swimming cossies that were in vogue during the 30s or voluminous shorts, vest, green beret and plimmies to effect the 8th Army look.

The trouble is that would exclude all the drivers.... assuming motor racing is "a sport".
Would Jay Kay have been barred if there was a no-trainer policy?

Unfortunately you only have to go as far as a town centre night club to see that "no jeans or trainers" has zero success in keeping away the riff-raff

If anything it'd make it worse. Enforcing strict codes doesn't seem to keep them away, just see any of the 'Aintree' threads on here, if anything it makes it aspirational for them.

I have not been to the FOS for a couple of years, but each time I have been I have enjoyed it immensley. The dress code is great for the revival and members meeting but the FOS is slightly different and although I would prefer not to see loads of people without tops I don't have a problem with it being a bit more relaxed - I think worn trainers from time to time although this didn't cause me to want to push people or be rude.

The sad truth is that when an event gets this popular you are bound to have a percentage that are less desirable. From my point of view bad behaviour and or rudeness is wrong whether it is by "the great unwashed" who don't know how to act in public or the "posh" just having fun. It seems both are equally able to behave or not.

With regard to the original post it is wrong whatever. If the damage was intentional or accidental the owner is still in the same boat and needs to put right something caused by someone not showing enough respect for other peopls property!

I remember seeing two kids playing around the Porsche 917/30 up in the top paddocks.

Hands all over it, pulling on the rear wing and running around it - parents standing idly by.

fking awful.

What happened to manners?!
I am afraid they started to disappear about 20-25 years ago along with respect for teachers/police/authority/property/people in general but that's another thread on Pistonheads.
Them were the days we respected teachers...who it turns out were shagging pupils "up to the spuds" the police who were lets be frank allowing it to go on, as long as you were a pillar of society, authority....well as long as you were not a miner complaining about being down a coal mine, throwing a sicky after thirty years because your lungs were bleeding out of your ears, property now that the magna carta has just quietly gone out of the window regarding property rights....Lord March is I'm sure a nice guy....however he is trousering a handsome profit.......why don't you give him a ring and suggest he restricts next year to semi retired baby boomer Daily Mail reading bowls players.......I'm sure he hankers after those halcyon days and will take a hit on 80% of his ticket revenue?

Not this year but last I took my top off, however it was so hot it was a welcome rest bite.

I had just returned from Iraq and I even thought 'wow this is hot' I did have a nice tan and no I don't have a beer belly nor was I wearing funny chavy clothes, I was just bloody hot that's all.

So don't judge everyone with their tops off as some type of moronic idiot.

I may also point out I'm in the GRRC and I never walked about with my top off, just when standing still on the hill.

However I do know what you mean. I've been to every FOS since the beginning and I've never really seen anything bad - off putting for me is fat people stuffing their face on burgers and chips with their rolls of fat hanging out and gash tattoos on show, as a package that looks totally bilge!
