SVS - dealerships over here are not as forthcoming with test rides as they are back home. I have yet to find a dealer that entertain the notion (not sure if this is just a Houston or Texas thing).
It'll vary from dealership to dealership. My local Triumph dealership said they have no problem letting me test most of the bikes there, including a Street, but hesitated at me trying a Daytona unless I had a good amount of experience with SS bikes(This was before I bought mine).

Suzuki SV650/SV650S makes a good first bike. Enough power to have a blast but not at all intimidating. You might outgrow it in 6-12months but that's the point, right?
This.

Thanks for the advice and guidance. I have decided to take a slightly different route for the first 6 months, going to pick this nice Suzuki TU250X up tomorrow - http://www.planokawasakisuzuki.com/new_vehicle_det...

Very cheap entry to biking for me and something that will allow me to learn to ride properly before buying a bigger bike.

Will let you know how it goes!!

Looks fun rather than intimidating, enjoy (I spent 2 years and 22k miles on a 125cc 2-stroke when I started).

Ticked that off 2 weeks ago. Discovered the margarita pitchers that led to a $150 drunken cowboy hat purchase before Billy Bobs!!?,

I have a street triple and I think it's too much for a first bike. On the day I picked it up I got onto the M4 and was doing 90mph in second half way down the slip road without even trying. It's a total hoot to ride, but it's also relatively twitchy, pretty powerful and has very sharp brakes. A smaller Monster would be a better bet I think.

SV650 is also not a bad first bike, although once you get used to it you might find the front forks hold you back a bit... They are fairly crude. Don't think this particularly matters for a first bike though.

The UK equivalent of that would be sending a CBT-er out on the road for the first time, unsupervised, on any bike they want.
I'm from the US, so though I have some exposure to your licensing process, I don't know it through and through. I learned in a parking lot, practiced in my local neighborhood, and rode on the road. Then I got my license. Things are very different here.
I got my bike licence in Italy, the test was a multiple choice (A, B or C) tickbox 'exam', I think there were 12 questions and you were allowed a couple of mistakes - no actual riding involved.

BTW the car test was the same 'exam' but with 3 extra (car related) questions, although there was also a driving test.

If you had a car licence you automatically got the bike licence...

I tried a SV650 and ER6 just after I passed my test, They were, fine... I didn't love either one, then I test rode a street triple and it was for me, night and day. It was so much more 'fun' to ride. I'd go test one out. It definitely isn't too much. It is all down to your right hand anyway, no matter how fast the bike is. You know what they say, make sudden wrist movements, you end up hurting yourself... wink

Hi Ben

Monster or Triumph Street Triple? I Don't like the monster's headlight. But Ducati do make a good bike . But for me it would have to be the Triumph Street Triple every time... Why? It is a quality motorcycle, is a great ride, looks great, it is a Triumph, it's got great build quality and is very reliable, Triumph has a massive world wide following and is especially sort after in America. Triumph have always had a bad boy image in American films, It is also British and Triumph always gets lots of good commens from tyre kickers who always want to talk bikes...

As a wide card suggestions here are a couple of other choices: Triumph Thruxton (Cafe racer version of the Bonneville).. It alway turns heads with its classic look. Won't be as quick as a Triumph Street Triple. But it is still a great bike.... The cafe racer scene in America is very popular.

The other option if you don't want a Harley but still have a liking for American muscle cruisers is the 1731cc Victory (Vegas, Hammer or Jackpot)..

I have two bikes. The first bike I purchased straight after doing me test was the Victory Vegas 8-Ball and within six months i got a Triumph Thruxton... If I could add a third and forth bike to the collection it would be a Triumph Street Triple and a Victory Hammer...

Best of luck and let us know how you get along

Picket up my little TU250X today. Very easy and comfortable to ride, hope it lasts me 6 months while I get my bearings.

Oddest thing, without even thinking you see every car as someone trying to kill you :-)

Street Triple was my first bike and found it great as long as you know your limits, but thats the same on any new bike, Street Triple vs Monster was my choice and went for the Street as it felt more comfortable to sit on and in my opinion is a better looking bike

street triple... decent steering lock
Hang on, we're talking about the same street triple that has the turning circle of an oil tanker? Unless they've changed them recently steering lock is not one of its plus points!
