Bernie Ecclestone wants to see big teams run third cars and believes smaller outfits should quit F1 if they are unable to foot the bill.

Cost-cutting has been on the agenda this season and the idea of bigger teams running customer cars has already been mooted as one possible solution. But Ecclestone feels it would be in F1's best interests commercially to allow the bigger teams to run a third car under their own banners, even if it forced some smaller teams out of the sport.

"They must stop," Ecclestone told Gazzetta dello Sport when asked what smaller teams should do about costs being out of control. "If you don't have the finances, you quit. I'm ready for a Formula 1 with eight teams with three cars each.

"Is it better to have a third Ferrari or a Caterham? Ferrari could maybe find new sponsors in the USA and an American driver: fantastic. It is the same for the others. Take Caterham: it has invested lots of money and it would need just as much, so it looks for paying drivers. What for, since it has never been competitive?"

Even though Haas Formula will join the grid in 2016, and with rumours of another team ready to be accepted into the fold, Ecclestone thinks buying existing outfits is actually the way forward for those wishing to enter the sport.

"It's not easy to start from scratch, F1 costs money," he said. "To buy a team with a windtunnel, simulator and so on, one requires an investment of around €150 million. And you haven't even started: then you need the drivers, the right technicians to build the car, and the good ones are few and expensive. That's why Ferrari wanted Newey."

As with 95% of what Bernie says, take with a mountain of salt.

Next week he'll be saying teams should be limited to 2 cars and smaller teams should be rescued and not leave the sport.

When will the German legal system do us all a favour and lock away this twerp for a few years?

I wouldn't be so sure about that.

If Sauber vanish and one or two other teams run into trouble this summer it may well happen indirectly with one or two engine suppliers taking a stake in the smaller teams this having three or for car teams. Sadly from a sponsorship position F1 offers the corporate world nothing in todays digital marketplace. This will drive teams out of business....

But then his drive and commitment to the sport have done it wonders for worldwide exposure. Yes, he's a bit of a loon sometimes, but he's done more good for F1 than bad. (His personal bank balance notwithstanding.)

Bernie will make a false company with the 20x cat as the CEO buy the salt mountain! Each cat dies and leave him a portion of the company!

I agree with berni on this one...

3rd car costs bigger all (relatively) and is another seat to sell...

I'd actually quite like to see eight teams of three cars.

Has Bernie given any indication how he'd dole out constructors points if there's a mix of 2 car and 3 car teams on the grid ?

top 2 of 3 get points. means you cant outscore the two car teams but the chances of 2 points scoring finishes are higher.

To combine 2 threads, I'd support this if the third driver had to be female. That would be progress

You reckon 100% then?

Bernie's interest is in making money. From that we can conclude that whatever Bernie says is angled at making money and not conveying information.

The sale of the rights is the big thing with Bernie, after the court case of course. What he is spouting is confidence in the product.

Does he have any long-term concerns about the sport?

Does he want what is best for the fans?

The viewing public?

The teams?

Himself?

Please pick any one of the four above.
