That's against Mitchell 'gunslinger' Johnson in Australia. How did he compare to everyone else? We have a fair few young'uns in the side, nowt wrong with a bit of maturity and we could easily get 3 years out of him.
Too easy HR, He didn't average as many as KP, who was also dropped.....

The IPL situation is unique for England as the tournament does not clash with the domestic season of any other test playing country.
So who are we playing these tests against ? We played the West Indies during the IPL previously as well. Just that Chris Gayle was allowed by his board to play IPL.
So it is not a unique situation. Appreciate the ECB took a different view, but it is one of the reasons why the ECB are st at managing talent.
Hence Carberry asking "will I play for England again" is answered by the coach as "I can't say" and that fairly straightforward question appears to have put Carberry in the offside in terms of future selection.
Wierd aren't they !

So who are we playing these tests against ? The issue in England is that players are contracted to the ECB and also their County. In order to play in the IPL they have to be released by both the ECB and the County (BCCI insist on a 'No Objection Certificate' for all IPL players). Because the IPL clashes with the County Championship season if the ECB release an England player then the County expect them to be available to them to play for them in the Championship.
Strictly speaking the BCCI were in breach of undertakings between the cricketing boards that no-one would schedule new competitions during other cricket boards domestic seasons but this was ignored in favour of the money that could be made. The ECB have tried, without success, to persuade the BCCI to move the IPL to earlier in the year so that it does not clash with the Championship.
Visiting test teams to England have had to leave out some players in recent years as they would rather play in the IPL than play a couple of early season tests in England. Chris Gayle did not play in the tests when the West Indies visited in 2012 but did play in the ODIs (by which time the IPL had finished). By declining to make themselves available for selection by the national side they are not obliged to then appear for their county/state/etc as it is out of season. Therefore they are free to play in the IPL. Also tours of England only come around once every 3 to 4 years so players are free to play in the IPL in the other years.
Trott made a century today , is he up to coming back into the team ? I would have thought not but on the outside chance he is mentally up to return ing in the near future it could be a massive boost.
Sussex's general manager puts some of the blame for Prior leaving on the media. Nothing to do with carrying 3 injuries and conceding the most byes by an English wktkeeper in 80 years.

I'm not sure putting Trott into a failing team would do him much good as the stress could be huge. greygoose said:

I'm not sure putting Trott into a failing team would do him much good as the stress could be huge. The selectors need to make a few long term decisions and have the balls to stick with it. They made a decision to eject KP knowing that the side already needed an opener and had lost it's number 3. Effectively we needed to find 2,3 and 4 in the batting line up all at the same time....whilst also having no spinner worthy of a place and a wicket keeper who they knew had long term injury problems and had just had an awful year with the bat.
It's no surprise they're having a shocker.
Can't rememeber who said it but this current mess is entirely of Flower's making....he had the chance to eject KP in Oz but bottled it and left the current maangement to deal with it. Also took Swann and Trott on a tour they never should have been on...and now he's pulling the strings in the background.

Bringing Trott back would be going backwards.
Prior should not play for England again either. Cook's statement smacked of "good old boys can play when they want regardless of form". This is wrong, players should be picked on form. Right now Prior couldn't catch a cold. If he knew he was unfit, then he should've declared himself as unfit. Sussex putting some of the blame on him with drawing from the squad on the media is preposterous and weak. If you do not want to be subjected to media attention, then do not become famous / international sports man.
If you're not performing then you should not be picked, simple as, whether you're the captain or the tea boy. Get players in who are in form.

Bringing Trott back now would be the worst thing for him personally (potentially) so given the decision making process and history of the management I can see it happening....
Seriously though other than stripping off in a bar Ballance has been one of the positives, doesn't look hurried at the crease when he first gets in, so could fill the role Trott played so well when on form.

Buttler, Woakes and Jordan in for Prior, Plunkett and Stokes.
England win the toss and choose to bat on a green top.
I'd love for Cook to find some form. I'd love for the bowlers to bowl well and for the batsmen to play themselves in and wear the opposition out. Here's hoping for some good cricket.
