I wear a datejust every day-it's a tank & I'll never sell it.

However, I've been thinking about getting something a little dressier, something for nights out etc. & basically something I wouldn't necessarily wear everyday.

As much as I'd like to save up for a rose gold Daytona, it's a bit of a waste to sit in the safe week in week out never getting much use. So I started thinking about these Cellini ones.

Reasonable prices, wind up (I think?) so I don't need to worry about lack of use & rather showy for occasional use.

Are these things any good?

I might like them a bit more than the usual Rolexes!

Quite fancy the Cellini Date, (reference 50515) with the black dial.

Rather nicely understated.

I have just received the latest Rolex catalogues and the Cellini one is thicker than the regular one. The new ones actually don't look too bad. I am off to a Rolex event on the 18th so plan to have a closer look.

I'm thinking of something like the following

I like the history of the prince model but without trying one on I'm not sure it wouldn't feel like walking around with a carriage clock on your wrist!

Beautiful and beautifully made.

But I would want to buy a dress watch from a dress watch company like Vacheron or Jaeger, not a sports watch company like Rolex. That is my perception of the Cellini line, it's for people who can't think of buying a watch beyond Rolex.

And there's no harm in that, a little like buying an SUV from Porsche; it makes no sense to me, but it clearly does to many tens of thousands of people...

That's a good point I suppose yeti, car to post up some examples of dress watches that I might actually consider as an alternative?

I wouldn't say I can't look beyond a rolex, but truth be told (& I've mentioned it on here before) I've worn this watch for over 15 years every day & it has just never let me down. I only got it serviced as I fancied replacing the chipped glass. Like 'em or loathe 'em, they're bloody good watches & friends I have who are into watches always seem to have one thing or another being worked on in their collections, iwc, jlc etc.

I suppose it's a bit like other things in life (rightly or wrongly) if I want something for the kitchen, it's siemens, tv it's sony, seats for the car recaro.

I'm a marketers dream I suppose!

Not sure.

Get a PP Calatrava (ideally 3919) instead.

What sort of budget? Is pre-owned OK?

Steel; this is currently haunting me... http://www.hackettwatches.com/hw/items/PART9K4LX3

Gold; phew, the world is your oyster (no pun intended), just search chrono24 ;

st the bed that is nice. Pre owned no problem, platinum or white gold would be nice-I got a platinum wedding ring as a yellow gold didn't look right against my rolex.

It must, no option-MUST have or can be fitted with a brown/tan leather strap.

I quite like rose gold, yellow gold would also be nice for something different. Maybe a bi-metal would be bent to go with my ring (my only other bit of jewellery)?

I tried on the basic (cheapest @ £10k) on Friday evening and it was lovely on, a proper grown ups watch - I felt that if I were 50 rather than sub 40 it would be the perfect watch - understated and elegant.

I hadn't really considered them previously and can't due to the price anyway, I will have to stick to my Explorer 1 - poor little old me :-)

I'd think carefully about buying a moo phase for a dress/occasional wear watch - it'll take forever to set every time you put it on, unless you keep it on a winder.

I'm on the lookout for a dress watch (as I have sold my Reverso) and am sorely tempted by this:

In this price range, it would be rude not to explore possibilities in the Grand Seiko range too, e.g. some of the high-beat automatics or a lovely Spring Drive cloud9
