sounds like a daft question. one is supercar purity, the other is new fangled, highly stylised electric motoring sans the v8 wail of a 430. however, the more i see of the i8 and the more i read about it and the more i see of those scissor doors, the more tempted i am to place an order. i'm guessing that depreciation will be minimal as i'm guessing it's going to be popular.

thoughts people?

serious question, but interesting that you think it may not be.

Apparently current order book sees a one year lead time - it looks like the width of the sills will be familiar to 355 owners

Are you sure about the order book? I was offered a first qtr delivery. Also told by a dealer last month that they'd only got 7 confirmed orders. Trying to get a feel for the depreciation side before pressing the button.

I think supply will be minimal - June was quoted to me today for a standard (not launch) model whatever that is

Certainly looks like interest is rising now that the BMW marketing machine is revving up - damn - should've got the order in last month as probably would've been able to flip it after a few months with no loss/perhaps a little gain.

Had a good look in Geneva, nice looking car but not sure about all that modern stuff like electrickery ! even if we all wont have any choice one day.
Regards value, its such a niche market that I am not so sure people will be climbing over each other to buy one.
Reminds me a bit of the original M1

I've never done this, do you just sell it in the usual way or would you depend on dealerships having customers lined up to buy one quickly?

Btw. This morning I was quoted delivery around March with some customers taking delivery in December (those that added the 12k lifestyle thingy option).

What a genuinely interesting and thought provoking question.

I say this because I can see different types of people giving similar answers for different reasons. Those who appreciate Ferrari for its mechanical beauty may also appreciate the new wave electronic/hybrid beauty brought to such high levels in the i8.

Those who love posing (mercifully few on PH) may be swayed by the newness combined with a degree of credibility.

Of course there are those of us who remain petrol heads (and literally pistonheads) for whom anything electric lacks a key component of the motoring experience. Is till find myself in this category personally but seeing the way the wind is blowing generally know these days are numbered and am heartened that certain manfufacturers are looking to create cars with a form of spirit and brilliance in them involving ths technology as I know ultimately these types of cars will replace our fossil flavored favorites and at least the spirit of engineering excellence as part of a driving experience will survive.

Looking back, not sure if much of that makes sense smile

I have had exactly the same thoughts and there was a very lengthy post on another forum.

I came to the conclusion that the i8 is a very exciting proposition (as far as I am concerned).

I currently run a v12v and a few more oldies, and besides the fact that the i8 is close to the polar opposite of my current fleet, I am seriously tempted by one.

I reserve my judgement till i drive one which should be around early August.. On paper, I am sold... However, the proof's in the pudding!

Tough call, and a good question.

It is a major social downgrade from a Ferrari badge to a BMW badge.

And the i8 is slower than a 430.

But the i8 is a newer, pretty'ish car, especially in black, with the added theatre of the scissor doors.

And the i8 is a peek into the hybrid future (rightly or wrongly, that is where things are headed for now).

Personally, if I had to buy a Bimmer, I'd be tempted to wait for a faster "i8s" or "i9" model to be released. The 0-60mph time would really need to duck under 3.5secs, ideally under 3.0secs, to get majorly excited about it.

We have one on order and it should be with us (December 2014 or early 2015) but the dealer did say there are rumours of an M version and a spider???

For 100k you're not far off a Mclaren (in winter) or a Lambo, DBS etc etc.
I'm really curious why you're choosing to buy a BMW?

it looks gorgeous in the 'flesh' - however IMO half the fun of driving is the sound.....

I think the main reason is the 5% benefit in Kind tax and the 5K grant from the government helps too!
Other wise its a very exciting car, the first to offer affordable Electric fun with Good build quality and it also happens to look insane. We also happen to be a BMW mad family so that helps with decisions.

You must have a very generous employer for BIK to be relevant on an i8 !

Or own the business. I could get one through my company. However the more I think about this, and I remain sorely tempted, I think I would regret coming out of a ferrari to buy one. Especially as after the initial excitement settles, you're left looking at a BMW logo on your steering wheel. I think I'll wait for vanquishes to come down to somewhere closer to 100k instead. They do look bloody good though!!

Ditto - but I'm thinking of swapping out of my Ampera and keeping the prancing horse for my petrol fix wink
