Who, in your opinion was the best occupier of 221B Baker Street?

I would have to say Basil Rathbone in the classic 30's/40's episodes along with his bumbling sidekick Nigel Bruce..(Dr Watson)

I wouldn't say 'poor', they just didn't capture the essence of Holmes as well as Jeremy Brett did.

I like the Robert D Jr version along with his Jude Law Dr W, but Benedict & Freeman are also good, as are Johnny LM and Lucy Lu.

In fact, I quite like all the modern ones because they all show both Holmes and Watson to be competent *physically* as well as mentally.

Just been watching a Jeremy Brett episode on the box. I've always thought he was 'The Best'. Read his account of playing the part, sounds like it nearly drove him insane!

Jeremy Brett most accurately portrayed the personality of Sherlock Holmes, but Basil Rathbone *looked* more like him.

Most of the Jeremy Brett episodes were word-for-word from the books and are the definitive adaptations IMO.

Jeremy Brett no doubt about it.

The Cumberbatch & Freeman combo works well although the last series was a disappointment. The other modern attempt is farcical, unless that is, you are of the game station generation which is why, I suppose, it needs the constant CGI action to keep one's attention. That's not IMO what Sherlock Holmes is all about.
