Dragstalgia - this weekend !

Just a reminder about this coming weekend' and this super nostralgic drag racing event at Stanta Pod.

Dates : 11th - 13th July.
The eliminations start in friday and racing all Saturday and Sunday.
Lots to see in the pit lanes and kids kept amused with monster trucks etc.
Live bands in the evening.
Its one of their main events and people are bringing all the old dragsters out this year
including from the USA / Germany and Netherlands.
Lots of V8 noise and some beers !

I try to be not envious to everyone going watching -or even racing- but fail.
There is a small race in Bitburg where my services are booked.
I hope for a good dose of UK sunshine so the metalflake and pinstripes can be viewed in all their glory.
NitrOlympX race director is also going to look at some interesting cars for invitations to Hockenheim.

After sitting in a van out of the rain for most of the Summer nationals the weather forecast has me a little gun shy about Dragstalgia! Why are the weekdays glorious and the weekends so soggy... grrrr
Alternatively, you could keep the faith, be optimistic, invest thirty quid (the best value weekend there is) and support the sport and track that have taken a real pasting this year from the weather.Jeez, some people....

Perhaps a little harsh, Jon! The reality is that sitting watching the rain isn't much fun, and it's even less fun when you've paid 30 quid plus travelling costs to do it. Yes, Santa Pod is going to be having a poor year financially because of the weather. But expecting spectators to come and watch anyway is IMHO some way beyond reasonable. If you're a racer, then just pay your entry fee and get on with it. But spectators? Why should they? It seems reasonable for them to look at the weather forecast and make an informed decision about how to spend their time and money. Although I'd recommend waiting until tomorrow evening before making that call. The Met Office publish graphs of forecast accuracies and three days out isn't as accurate as you might hope.Jon C said:

Calm down Jon, when did I say I wasn't going? my complaint was that weekdays are glorious and the weekends aren't..I'm still going, and investing my 40 quid just as I have done at least 4x per year for as long as I can remember, never accuse me of not supporting the Pod.

There's always rain-off values of course.With an 8-9 hour round trip involved, often on my Jack Jones and with the major costs of keeping a spare vehicle on the road specifically to be a tin tent for the Pod year in year out I find the rain off values a major incentive to take a chance on a bad forecast more often than not. In fact if I didn't it wouldn't be worth gearing myself up at all!
It was a lot better when rain-off values could be redeemed at the gate though - phone calls, deadlines and Royal Fail involvement these days seems a lot of unnecessary hassle, probably puts me off for the smaller events like the Mopars but the FIA, Nationals and 'stalgia are pretty much a given short of biblical proportion floods.
Forecasts are often wrong, and the track crew are legendary for defying the elements. Very rare you go home unsatisfied.

It felt absolutely awesome. The adrenaline was pumping but having done it before I had a fair idea of what to expect. Rob takes a real risk in his part of the Fireburnout so it's important to stay focused and make sure that there are no cockups. He also has a great view of if the flames are where they need to be so I took his signal as the right time. I know sitting there longer looks more daring, but it increases the risk that everyone involved takes. The fire can take the air away from the motor and make it stumble and that can leave you sat in a pool of lit petrol with people having to pull you out. It also increases the chance of damage to the car. I wore my older fire suit and found that the white stripes on my arm were actually singed/melted. A big thank you must go to Rob and the Safety crews at pod that made this possible. Doing this in my blown motor was a dream come true.Great weekend and as usual thanks are due to all the racers and officials for putting on a great event but to make a great event there are many other people involved who also deserve praise
On Saturday we had a member of the public have a medical emergency in the Historic / Hall of Fame marquee and i think the security people and medics deserve a mention for the quick , calm and professional manner in which they dealt with the incident
