Hi
I've always admired the tvr Tuscan from a distance
but I basically know very little about them. I'm looking
for some good honest advice on this subject and I know
there's bound to be pros and cons for every car but
I'd just like to make a decision based on facts not hearsay
before I consider buying
If there is anybody out there that can help as it really would
be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks in advance

Quirky electronics can give niggly issues - original engines in the mk1 had some inherent faults making them very likely to need a rebuild - some areas of the car are a pain in the ass to get to.

That's about it - everything else is amazing - sound - performance - look. Budget 1.5k a year for servicing and you'll be fine. Insurance and tax pretty cheap (they are taxed as a goods vehicle so about £240 even though its a 4litre engine!). 0-60 in 4 seconds.
Drive it in the rain and it will try to kill you (basically you have to drive it so carefully you may as well just drive a boring regular car on rainy days).

Get one with an engine rebuild and chassis in good nick/get Rob to look over it for you as a specialist for £200-300 and you're sorted =)

Cheers for that there's some pretty good stuff there
Made me laugh about driving in the rain! I must remember that!
Good idea to get some one to look it over as that would
be money well spent!
How would I get in contact with the right person to carry
an inspection ?
Thanks for the reply!

This guy is well known for knowing what to look for when it comes to TVRs: http://www.findasportscar.co.uk/ and a really nice guy to boot.

Just one other question if that's ok what should
I expect to pay for insurance and is it any cheaper
to go through the owners club?

Doesn't give much difference - the specialist insurers such as Mannings if anything cost a little more but track days etc. will be no problem and you can negotiate the price the car is worth on the policy in case of accident - probably looking at about 400 a year. You may well get quotes cheaper than that from the regular insurers and quite a few are happy to insure tuscans. If you are a young'un though you may pay more!
Owners club membership tvrcc does tend to give 10% off parts from some parts dealers though and you get a magazine each month which is nice. My wife got it for my birthday for me and I enjoyed it but didn't choose to pay for it myself the following year if that gives an indication of benefit.

And as you'll notice from the forums - there are always people happy to help if you have any issues - and a friendly wave if you pass any other TVRs - a far cry from porsche ownership! wink

I have spoken to the owners club and they have
been very helpful and sent me a free magazine which
was decent ,
but I know what you mean not sure if its totally for me
Just looked at that robs page and that's a top recommendation
that's just the kind of contact some one in my position needs
to make, have you ever used him or do you just know someone
who has?
Nice one though thanks for sharing the info!

Anytime!
I was going to but then found being sold a few miles from me with a rebuild, low price but looking a bit tatty - as I was intending to respray it (deep candy red) it was ideal for what I was after so ended up buying on the spot lol

Last time I spoke to rob ingleby, he wasn't doing inspection anymore. Guess it's still worth a call though as you he may have started up again

I have had my Tuscan for over 7 years now after owning a Chim 450 for a year. It is an early Mk1 so I factored in an engine rebuild which was done a year after I bought it by Racing Green. Since then it has needed the LED display fixing as the early ones also known to fail and up until last month all ok with regular servicing by the excellent Dan Taylor TVR in Kent. Last month the clutch failed (one of the fingers broke off) and this is the first time in my ownership that the car has actually broken down. She even did that at home so didn't leave me stranded at the side of the road. I have done various trips to Le Mans, the Alps, Snowdonia and the car has always got me there and back in one piece.

As for enjoyment of driving her, put it this way, she is for life. I don't ever intend selling her as I can't think if any other car that looks, sounds, and drives so amazing for 20 odd grand.

Another good reference/research source is the members car directory on here! Look here for starters http://www.pistonheads.com/members/fleet.asp?m=3&a... but be aware there are many different entries for 'Tuscan' as most people have called them slightly different names, so seach and read to see what costs/mods/extras etc people have been doing to theirs.

Having now pointed you to this source, I realise I need to update mine a bit more!

Depending on your car history it may well be worth getting quotes before making a purchase decision. A good number of insurers won't insure my wife on a TVR because she doesn't have sufficient high performance vehicle experience. The ones that would more than doubled the premium (to over a grand).

Likewise, when I bought my first properly quick car a number of insurers/brokers said "come back when you've insured it elsewhere for a couple of years".
