There is a HUGE stigma attached to London living, and its prevalent in all age groups, I find it pathetic. If I had a £1 for every time someone said "thats miles away" when I told them where I live, I'd be a rich man. The amusing thing is that everyone ends up doing the same thing eventually as very few can afford to live long term in z1/z2.
That has really increased in the past 20 years as well.

The really nice parts of London like Kensington & Chelsea have always been the most expensive places to live in the UK, but overspill areas like Fulham and Islington wouldn't have been much more expensive than Esher or Guildford in the 80s.

Now, those areas are hugely more expensive and a even lot of the rough areas in Z2/3 SE London are more expensive than Guildford.

I don't think post codes are definitive as they are only abbreviations of sorting offices. So RH is Rhoehampton and covers a large lump of south London and ditto with TN which is Tonbridge. The old way of defining London amongst many Londoners was ILEA (Inner London Education Authority) = London proper and everywhere else country cousins.

RH postcode is actually Redhill and covers a very large area and crosses both Sussex & Surrey and the main sorting office is actually in Gatwick so using postcodes as an indicator is a bit pointless, for example Middlesex exists as a postal county but hasn't existed as a county since 1965, Roehampton by the way is SW15 postcode, which covers Putney & Kingston Vale as well.

Camden is clearly London as I can see the Gherkin from the window!
Being able to see a landmark isn't really proving a point, can go up to Epsom downs and see all of London, from the Wembley arch to Canary Wharf.
Ok....new criteria, you need to see people looking back!

I can see the moon, I dont like there wink

Fair point biggrin

Wonder if people in places like Manchester, think the same? Lots of towns/villages lumped into a metropolitan area

It's not always that bad. The M25 sucks but it's the western section that is the worst, which I very rarely use.

I was reminded of this today when I saw on the news that the M25 was blocked from J5-J9 which is a section I very occasionally use on the weekends. By the sound of it what is usually a 30 minutes journey was taking many times that.

I am not sure if this really has an effect on the day-to-day life of most people who live and work in London. I don't want to re-ignite the silly arguments about what is London and what isn't, but I live right on the edge of it even by the very widest definition, and I can't remember the last time that I used (or crossed) the M25 on a weekday. I use it on weekends from time to time, but I doubt it is any worse than the M1 or M6.

There will be some people who live in London and commute out by car every day, but it must be a very small proportion of the overall population as it is quite a bizarre thing to do for most people.

Nothing at all. The hype that exists around London is that it is possible to have a better life there than elsewhere because there are opportunities that don't exist anywhere else in the UK.

That is true, but the majority of people just live the same (or worse) lives than they do elsewhere. If you live and work in a good part of Birmingham then you are likely to have just as good a life as most people in London, but perhaps not as good as those living in a large house in Belgravia with millions in the bank.

Those people represent a tiny proportion of London as a whole. At the other end of the scale, many struggle with extreme houses prices on quite normal salaries.

LDN, st hole, would never ever live there.

Surburbia 4 lyf, homez.

Seriously though, I don't know why people like it.....Cultral hot spot? LOL. Beautiful people? LOL. Quality of life? LOL.
It seems to to be a case of Finance/Legal work hard, earn lots of money, have a sudden realisation it's no way to live, then go up Peaks/lakes with the money they made in LDN.
