His early death & a fair bit of niche material can't have helped, SRV suffered from the same.
In modern blues & guitar circles he is rightfully a legend.

I'm not sure any of us will ever live long enough to have time to take in and savour the full extent of the talent and genius that Rory squeezed into a sadly, relatively short life.

Saw him many times and it was always a sell out.

Perhaps his voice was an acquired taste.?

Was on One of the Sky channels - just watching it with the music playing through the big speakers !!

Would have loved to have seen him playing live

Alledgedly, when Jimi Hendrix was asked what it was like to be the greatest guitar player in the world, he answered that he had no idea and should ask Rory biggrin

One of my ambitions in life is to learn how to play Pistol Slapper Blues half as well as Rory played it. Still a long way off...

Because he wasn't that good? I've tried listening to him plenty of times over the years but just haven't clicked. Mind you I think Hendrix is over-hyped.

I thought this thread was going to be the exact opposite!

Obviously a capable guitarist but i don't understand how he is always ranked fairly highly on all time great lists.. just sounds very unoriginal to me

Goldblum there are a lot of technically brilliant guitarists out there but Jimi Hendrix is highly rated as he played in his own completely uninhibited style and played what he felt rather than what people expected. He opened up the vocabulary of the electric guitar for others to follow.

Rory had a great stage presence and played to his audience, Jimi perhaps played more for himself and the audience were incidental.
I first saw Rory in the Corn Exchange in King's Lynn in 1967. We sat around like a load of stuffed dummies while he tried everything to light us up. What he did not know was that he had lit us up inside but we were too inhibited to show it. He never changed and was not interested in fame. He turned down many opportunities, I think one time to join the Stones.

I love this clip of him playing "Politician" with Jack Bruce. He did not even know the song but after a steady start they both are really jamming like no other and Jack's grin says it all!

I came to his music relatively late - not 100% sure where I first heard him playing but I think it was a clip of Brute Force and Ignorance played live. I just loved the fact that he seemed to be enjoying playing the music and was engaged with the audience. I always prefer musicians who enjoy what they do, rather than being formulaic or technically brilliant but lacking emotion.

But at the end if the day, we all like different things, or the same thing for different reasons, and there are plenty of artists I don't 'get'.

I've tried to like Rory, but so much of it is run of the mill boppy rock'n'roll stuff I gave up a while back. Someone once said there's no such thing as st music - just music you like and music you don't like. I'd prefer almost any other guitarist to Rory Gallagher to be honest, but there you go.

I think I need to arrange for a swarthy Mediterranean gentleman to come around for a discussion on the fitment of cement footware. rolleyes
