Are the hoffmans the most useless miners ever ? They must be well paid for the programme to cover the costs of plant hire and travel , and if they spent as much time digging as they do patting each other on the back and praying maybe they might turn a profit .
I know it's only a tv show , but it's one I can't stop watching , waiting to see what this weeks disaster will be !

I love the show but i can't stand Todd hoffman. He is the biggest problem that they have. He will ask them to do the impossible just because he believes in them and then without fail it will all go tits up. Makes my blood boil at times

Todd negotiated $100k an episode for all of his senior crew from Discovery, after the first series. He's very astute - the TV thing is simply a TV thing.

Yep, love the show - but Todd and his 'frickin' Dad are morons - why Dave Turin hasn't set up himself is beyond me.

Todd's only skill (apart from securing excellent appearance fees it seems) is to clutch defeat from the jaws of victory again and again. I couldn't work for him, his MO seems to be to get into a huge mess and just when things look like they're going to fall apart, he leans on Dave and says "I need you to get X ounces in Y days" usually vastly more than they've got in 10 times the time up to that point - then act like Dave let them down when he doesn't.

So who is everyone's favourite crew?

I think mine is currently Fred and Dustin.

That Dave guy appears to be the only one with anything about him , I'm guessing the fee the others get compensates them enough to be cast as idiots , Dave for his own show on how to succeed in gold mining ?

Probably Parker's - he's about 5 years old and has faced about every challenge you would expect he would - namely being taken seriously by his much older crew and a total lack of experience - he makes stupid mistakes all the time and sometimes acts like a brat, but I think he understands that in descending order the best way to handle a challenge is:

Make the right decision.
Make the wrong decision.
Make no decision at all.

I do like Parker, and the guy who he's leased his land from is brilliant. Tells it exactly as it is and doesn't mess around. Loved one of the first episodes when he took his 15% cut there and then...think Parker was expecting something to happen at the end of the year.

I do like parkers crew but I think parker needs to learn that he is not always right and listen to his crew more. I like fred and dustin aswell. They seem to love what they are doing but have a lot of bad luck. Its hard to know whats real and whats for tv in these programs so i think its best to try not to think about it too much. Apparently the guy on todds crew in the first series that got fired was only meant to be there for a few episodes but the extended it to more as his stupidity was entertaining. I think i nearly cut his own leg off with a chainsaw at one point.

Tony Beets is the best character ... no bullst and nothing is ever good enough

the Hoffman lot just make me crack up, useless useless miners.

I like Porcupine site the best though, amazed at how deep they went into the glory hole!

Isn't he just typical Dutch , I know half a dozen Hollanders as the French call them and they are all very direct , you know exactly where you stand with them . He does know what he's doing though and I'm guessing he really is only there for the money .
Hoffmans on the other hand , gold or diamonds ? What next , salt ?

Tony Beets might be direct but I couldn't work with him. Mainly because I can't understand a bloody word he says.

Series 4 - mid-way.

A bit like Fast n' Loud the show has become much, much bigger than when it started - revolves around 3 crews now - one in the US, one in Canada and one in South America, but they all know each other.

Fred and Dustin (father and Son) run a small 4 person crew, mining a tiny patch with a massive hole in it - they actually stole the pitch from the Hoffmans, they've spent the last 2 years digging a fuggin' massive hole trying to find the bottom of an accident waterfall where they expect to find tonnes of gold - they don't need to find nearly as much as the others because by gold mining standards it's a tiny operation.

Parker snable, sknable - anyway - Parker something runs a medium sized crew on land he leases from a 'direct' Dutch geezer who, whose half tormentor / half father figure and helps him out with advice - the advice usually an expletive laden mini-tirade of the unpleasant direction everyone, including Parker, knew he would have to take. His greatest asset is the ability to buy/rent/lease/borrow or steal equipment that Todd Hoffman has discarded in favour of the latest bit of experimental mining bling - unlike Todd he seems to be able to get it running twice as well, with half the crew.

Todd Hoffman - professional clown and lover of fried food - Todd's crew is a bit like So Solid Crew, there's that many members it's not really possible to count them all, every series he had a brainwave - usually involving impossible targets, improbable locations and experimental equipment - in his world there's 3 ways of doing things, the right way, the wrong way and the Todd way - the 'Todd way' is like the wrong way, but somehow worse - Todd is a dreamer - he dreams the dreams, but expects his crew to doing to mundane stuff like turning them into reality - if Todd is the dreamer than his greatest asset is somehow keeping Dave Turin from walking out on him - Dave's a doer, he can lead the crew without mutiny, he can actually operate machinery and get gold out of the ground and into the 'pan' - every day Todd and his crew pray for Gold - God sent Dave, by the last week of the season they're usually running pretty well and making money - but like McLaren instead of starting the next season with the equipment and methods of the last - they like to rip up the blueprints and make the same mistakes again, with some new ones in the mix - currently (in TV land anyway) they're mining for Diamonds in a Gold mine in South America - a move they where pushed into after spending a week mining suspiciously soft ground laden with old bits of plastics and work boots - "hey, some s already minded this ground!!" but it's okay because Dave is back and had started mining gold for them.

I clearly enjoy this bit of faux reality nonsense far, far too much.

Cheers. Will need something to watch after I finish Game of Thrones.

I can admit to owning a gold pan too!

Todd Hoffman? What a clown.

Remember in S3 his 'turbotrommel' that never collected a gram of gold?

So he waltzes over to share Dave's 'BigRed' washplant and proceeds to wreck that too on the first night by ignoring all the advice he was given.

In real life, no investor would lend that fat tt a cent.

Did anyone watch the last of the series last night ?
Hoffmans proud as punch with the haul of diamonds only to be told they are worth around 2k , along with the less than 3k in gold , that's dollars as well .
150 days in the jungle , I hope discovery is paying them well !
