spark plugs focus 2005 mark II

trying to change the spark plugs in the focus 1.6 zetec but I cant seem to get a grip on them. The top of the engine cover shouldnt need to be taken off for this should it?

Does you plug spanner not have the rubber grommet in it that holds the spark plug until you lift it out?

If not just use a pair of long nosed pliers to pick them up after you have loosened them.

I have never had an issue with removing spark plugs (although I have never done it on a focus) I can't imagine a Focus is different to any other car.
