M40 northbound at Warwick yesterday afternoon. Joined from the A46 and my heart sank as the stationary traffic came into view. Eventually turned the engine off after there were more vehicles behind and settled in to await the emergency serviced to whizz down the hard shoulder.

Some drivers further down, in the adjacent on slip and behind start to turn around and drive back up the slip onto the busy island, despite joining HGVs and cars, some of whom would have had an obscured view as I had. Chump in a Defender even comes up the grass verge to get around turning vehicles.

Guy in front wants to follow suit but part way through doing so needs more space and wants me to move. He may have somewhere to be, but so have I and as far as I'm aware he's about to do something dangerous, disruptive to traffic on thr island and endorsable. I don't move and won't unless Highways/Police come to manage the situation - they're based a mile or so away.

Wrong?

You're absolutely right but personally I'd be worried that the tool who would perform such a manoeuvre is the same sort of tool who when prevented from doing so would resort to just bumping my car out of the way.

I helped organise people turning round on the southbound carriageway of the M6 so that we could exit via the entry slip just behind us.

But only did so when it was clear that a. The motorway was closed behind us with all traffic being diverted off, b. The slip was also closed, and c. The motorway was closed in both directions. Without knowing those things I would have sat and waited.

To look at it differently.

The road is cleay blocked.
A few people have used their initiative and decided to turn around.
It's a perfectly clear evening, visibility is good and everyone can clearly see what's happening.
It's perfectly safe to turn around

Sitting there adds no value to anyone.

What's the point is waiting and blocking the road when you can clear off. Why wait for a cop to organise such a basic thing.
You're adults not school kids, you can deal with the situation yourselves.

Choosing not to turn around is your choice.
But blocking someone else just seems petty and small minded.

So the OP would rather just sit there like a tool and block anybody that tries to escape.

Divvy.

If you had blocked myself i would have got out and punched you in the head. As above, why a obstruct people from doing what is common sense. Your obviously very British in the view of queuing. Do you get angry when people overtake you as well?

Sitting there would have taking "playing by the rules" maybe a step too far, but being obstructive was just plain Trades Unionist. What's your day job?

Course you would sweetheart. The OP wasn't blocking anyone deliberately, he just wasn't prepared to make an illegal move in live traffic. If the OP was a woman would you still insist on violence as the solution to your problems - seems like you get angry at very little if that's your preferred method of dealing with situations.

It reads to me that he was being deliberately unhelpful = prick.

You sound like a bit of a jobs worth to e honest. If all you had to do was move your car a bit forward, no need to be the world's policeman.

Shirley unless directed by either a Police officer or womble then reversing or U turning on a slip road is an endorsable offence? Whats to say CCTV cameras are not recording? Ive sat for several hours in traffic and until told do not travel the wrong way on a motorway or slip road.

Stikes me there are alot of drivers with no patience or respect for other road users.

Punching people on the nose? Really? Perhaps anger management would be appropriate... Remember though, some people carry "tools" in their cars and wouldnt take kindly to abuse without justification.

Wrong to assist something that is:

1. Illegal, and

2. ABSOLUTELY fkING RETARDED

Not at all.

For all of the keyboard warriors threatening a punch on the nose, I can only assume you missed this bit of the OP:

Since we're in keyboard warrior mode today, if I had a crash because some was coming the wrong fking way up an entry slip, I'd pull you out of your car and run you over just to make sure you couldn't do something so monumentally stupid ever again.

Is it not illegal to drive the wrong way up a slip road - unless instructed to do so by the Highways Agency or Plod?

Thought so....

You can certainly tell its Saturday, little boys with access to mummy and daddies computer leaves you with this kind of mind numbing moronic reply, of course you will punch someone in the face for not driving illegally, very easy to make pathetic threats on the Internet eh?? Army my arse.............If you were, you're an embarrassment to your regiment and anyone who has ever served.
I am with OP, let the other driver get in a right mix up and stay put. If someone wants to drive like a tool it's up to them, to criticise on here for not joining in shows a fantastic level of moron so well done, I say moron because you clearly think a punch on the nose is coming from someone who

A: Cannot escape as you are already blocking them in
B: Has a ready made queue of witnesses
C: May well be on CCTV for extra back up
D: Will be on YouTube before they have even got back to the car after assaulting you

Good news though to see a healthy population of oxygen thieves are still spouting s.h.i.t.e. on here though, PH never lets you down for a laugh on a Saturday morning........................................

Turning on a slip road - absolute cretins.

In this situation I would have reversed only if the the traffic behind me was stationary and there was a sufficient gap. If the other person wanted to do something stupid, they can be my guest - most slip roads are covered by CCTV.

An obscured view. Try explaining that the to bike rider who wouldn't have expected to see a divvy in a Land Rover heading the wrong way up the slip road.

Heavy Land Rover meets not so heavy bike rider.... Mmmm. I wonder who would have come off worse.....

I have rarely heard anything so profoundly moronic and stupid on PH since I joined.

The motorway is closed, is it? Except for three ambulances and two fire & rescue tenders coming to a multi-vehicle RTC in front of you. They're doing 85mph and they're suddenly now confronted with what? An utter imbecile who thinks it's OK to direct traffic the wrong way up a motorway and a slip road. You utter, utter bell-end!

FFS leave it to those who know what they're doing.
