I have just a call from my wife saying there is a lot of smoke coming from the back of her range rover sport 2.7 diesel and the engine is making a knocking sound. I have told her to leave it where it is and get a taxi home but as it is sunday I cant get anyone out to it.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

Sounds like possibly over fuelling or head gasket depends on colour off smoke. Is the RR Sport fitted with a DPF the jaguars fitted with hat engine and DPF inject so much excess fuel to regenerate the DPF that they practically fill sump to over flowing and run the crank bearings.

So it sounds like something that can be fixed then? If its a common issue then there must be people out there who have had this happen to them and had them fixed. Is there anyone on here?

She hasn't put petrol in the tank, has she?

If it's over fuelling as suggested, it needs an oil change urgently. It should not be driven because there is a danger of a diesel runaway.

My boss had a catastrophic engine failure in his diesel Range Rover, I can't remember which engine it was. Anyway it was a known fault affecting a number of cars whereby the engine block casting was pourous and was able to leak oil into the gearbox bellhousing, eventually the low oil level caused the engine to seize and this necessitated a replacement engine, which I believe was done under warranty.

Volvo V70 also has a problem with this thou there solution is to run with less oil in the sump ......

Is that the Peugeot diesel in that one ? .... Id be inclined to drop the oil straight out of it and see how much diesel is in there .... also the other thing is as with all DPF motors is to get them hot so that they regenerate if not get it plugged in and do a forced regen ... if the head gaskets have gone u had better have a quite word with the bank manager.

My bet is the crankcase is overfull and oil is now in the intercooler having been drawn by the turbo from the breather system.

Do not start the engine.
Check the oil level.
Drain out oil if overfull.
Remove intercooler and flush.
Only start engine after above work is completed.
Use engine diagnostics on dealer service equipment to show if an injector is over contributing which would likely be the cause of the overfilled sump.
