Hello everyone, I'm new to the site. I've just passed the interview with ocado for a delivery driver role. I have a driving assesment coming up, anyone know what it's like and what I will be doing. I'm nervous and I have experience of driving vans but not of ocado van size. It says with a qualified driving instructor. There's also a theory test at the end. Any ideas what kind of questions they will be asking?
Cheers.

"Are you confident pulling out of junctions without looking?"

"When I tap the dashboard, slam on the brakes and turn into the nearest driveway without signalling"

"Mirror, signal, park on zig zags"

Joking aside, go steady and I'm sure you'll be ok.

I used to work for them. All the test involves is turning between the curbs (the old three point turn) parallel parking kerbside and reversing around a corner, the rest is awareness and planning, smooth use of brake and accelerator, both hands on the wheel and check your mirrors often just like your car test,so nothing to worry about. Their vans are all automatic and a doddle to use.

However look for what would have been the rear view mirror, they have replaced it with a "smartdrive" camera, it records images in front of the vehicle as well as driver facing, so if you are eating or drinking at the wheel and you jab the brake for any reason the resulting jolt trips the camera to record thirty seconds of footage that will in turn be uploaded to the wifi system when you return to your depot or "spoke" as they refer to them. It is then reviewed by a team at head office and if an offence has occurred it will be emailed to your spoke manager who will give you a disiplinary or sack if appropriate. Remember big brother is watching you.

Good luck .

Thanks for the reply. What's the Theory test like? Do you have to get them all correct?

The test is a bit like Open all hours when Arkwright lets Granville drive his mobile grocery van.

It was three years ago now, from what i can remember its multi - choice, basic road signs, when not to over take etc, just have a quick flick through the highway code to refresh your memory 70 - 80% should be good enough, you will walk it so don't worry. They employ people from all backgrounds, where i worked there were redundant accountants and solicitors of close to retirement age that could not get a job anywhere else in West Yorkshire, not necessarily from a driving background.

Indeed so, there are no smoking stickers all over the cab. But its mainly eating and drinking whilst at the wheel they are very hot on, whether its a banana or a can of red bull, it is clearly pointed out at the induction, plenty of people were sacked when i worked their, they really don't take any prisoners.

Christ I thought it was bad at Tesco! Least there are no cameras in the cabs! That I'm aware of!

Not done it with Ocado, but have Tesco, I guess they will be a little similar?

I had a drive around the local area, three point turn, narrow roads and I think reversing.

Main thing that people fail on are speeding (thankfully most the vans here have limiters you can set) or crashing into other cars.

Good luck smile

Done this now. It went fine I think. The guy said now I have to wait 10-15 days to hear back but could be sooner. That's seems a bit long?

Okay so although ocado told me to wait 10 - 15 days for a reply of I got the job, they have reposted the job today. Is this a sign I have not got the job?

Not necessarily . As working for a supermarket ( tesco in particular ) is about as poxy as it gets , there is a very high turnover and they are always advertising .

The new ocado siteon the Isle of Sheppy is particularly bad to work for from what I've heard .

Unfortunately , the unskilled aspect of the job market is very cut throat and the supermarkets take advantage of this .

At least our groceries are cheap !!

Oh . Wait a minute , there not are they !

I'll re-phrase that .

At least the share holders are happy !!

Every decision you need to make is made for you by computer - navigation, drop order, time slots...they are probably working on a robot right now to drive in the future.

Apparently UPS in the States have their routes planned so they don't even turn right (and have their progress stalled by traffic lights or on-coming traffic).

It is only a matter of time before humans are removed from the equation completely (as with aeroplanes).
Eventually, there will just be a dog and a pilot in the cockpit - the pilot is there to feed the dog and the dog is there to stop the pilot messing with the controls. wink

Hi all, I have just completed and passed the ocado driving assessment and I can see a lot of people are quite worried out it. Don't be. When you arrive you fill in a theory test. Make sure you read the high way code. They then take you down to the warehouse. You will be taken to you're van my was a 65 plate. You will be shown around the van and told the width and height requirement for the van. When leaving the warehouse make sure you stick to the speed limit.

During the assessment you will be asked to do a reverse park. This is quite easy as they take you to somewhere quite and the kerb mirror helps a lot. You will be asked to back around a corner. Make sure when the front end starts to steer you check your left mirror. Apart from that I was asked to drive on dual carriageway and busy roads in London. It's quite easy so don't worry. I am only young and done it no problem.

Not necessarily, I drive for Sainsburys and people have knocked stuff over and clipped wing mirrors and still passed!
A company called drivetech do it, you barely have to be able to drive to pass, its shocking really!
