My dad borrowed my car last week (640 D Msport GC) and yesterday when I was walking towards it from Sainsburys I noticed something hanging down. On closer inspection it was the little lip under the front overhang (presume its there to let you know theres not enough clearance before you scrape the underside of the bodywork). To make things worse he's also kerbed the driver side alloy and the passenger side rear (373 20").

When asked he initially said it couldn't have been him, but when I mentioned the flapping trim he suddenly recalled how he encountered an Ambulance and there was no room....... still didn't get the exact story frown I can only assume he mounted the kerb, damaging the trim and driver side front alloy, then reversed and hit the passenger rear on the opposite kerb. Fortunately there doesn't appear to be any other damage so really its a case of replacing the trim and two alloy refurbs.

Anyone know the part number for that trim and how hard it is to replace (want to be informed before my dealer/local garage sucks their teeth and tries to do me over). Also I'm in West London (near heathrow), any recommendation for someone to refurb the alloys? One has very minor rash, the other a bit worse but still looks to be easily repairable.

Oh and any advice on what to do when your parents start turning into children would be greatly appreciated :/

I hope you get it fixed soon, they're a lovely car. Don't let your dad drive it again. Don't let anyones dad drive it. Get a ford focus with big rubbery tyres to lend him.

biggrin Its obviously not nice when stuff like this happens, but I know sooner or later I'd probably have kerbed an alloy. The bit that really annoys me is that he seems to be turning into a teenager, with an automatic denial followed by some waffle and excuses :/ really he should have just been straight up and told me so I could get it sorted and check for other damage.

Getting back to the actual problem, heres a pic of the damaged rubber lip. I've got under the car and it looks like it simply slides in, so if I can find a replacement with a bit of WD40 I can just replace it myself (the bit hanging down is ripped, so not just a case of re-inserting it). Any pointers on part number/etc greatly appreciated:

Looks like part 14 here http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/F06/Europe/640d-... which would be P/N 51 11 7 222 010.

Spoke too soon, phoned supply dept and they said that part isn't fitted to my car since I have an Msport. I'll have a look at the site to see if I can find a valid part number, otherwise its a trip upto them.

Odd, there isn't much else that looks right, unless it's part of 17 here http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=6A62... but it does not look like it to me. A trip to the dealers to find out the part number may be required.

I'll update the thread once I get a chance to visit the parts department (might be useful to someone else that comes across this thread with the same problem).

Local parts department weren't certain of the exact part either, so they took a punt and brought in what they thought was the part and they were right smile

Turns out it isn't just a rubber lip, but part of the protective trim/cover under the car. Fortunately only £19, but bit more involved to replace then originally hoped. For the benefit of anyone else with a similar problem that comes across this thread:

P/N: 51 75 8 056 068

http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/F13/Europe/650i-...

Part number 6 on that link.

I thought it looked more like it was in the middle of the car, must just be the angle of the picture. Makes a change when parts like that are relatively reasonably priced!

Yep, was a pleasant surprise. When he initially pointed it out on the schematics I thought here we go, £19 saved my Dad the telling off he's managed to avoid so far by playing dumb smile
